PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
This is a new funding program administrated by UptownSaint John Inc. a Business Improvement Area in the City’suptown. The program is intended to provide incentive toproperty owners and tenants to improve the exterior appearance of their properties.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
All non-residential property owners and tenants locatedwithin the Uptown Saint John Business Improvement Areaand not within a Historic Preservation Area are eligible for a grant under the Uptown Saint John Façade Program.Eligible Work:•Design fees•Signage•Painting•Windows• Awnings•Light fixtures•Electrical to facilitate exterior lighting•Reconstruction•Accessibility•Removal of materials that cover originalarchitectural details•Masonry cleaning and re-pointing•Repair to original architectural details•Landscaping and beautification including asurface parking area•Patio areas•Other work which may be deemedby the BIA Manager or designateto be in accordance with theobjectives of this program.
AVAILABLE GRANTS
1) A project grant is available for completed eligible workas outlined herein. The amount of the grant is 40 percentof the cost of the eligible work to a maximum of $2,000.per property line fronting on a public right of way.2)A design grant is available for eligible work at 50 percentup to a maximum of $1,000.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications are available at the offices of Uptown SaintJohn Inc. at 40 King Street in uptown Saint John or onlineat www.uptownsj.com. Applicants will complete theattached application and include drawings and other details ie: paint colours, etc so that an informed decisioncan be made the BIA Program manager and FaçadeProgram Committee. Once all information is receivedprojects will be approved in a timely manner, no morethan a two week period.
CONDITIONS OF GRANT
1) Work that is structural in nature must be approved bythe City Building and Technical Services Department.2)Work carried out must be considered an improvementover the current condition and utilize design principlesthat will enhance character of the building and street frontage of the block.3) Work carried out on historic buildings should notdamage the historic integrity of the façade. Originaldetailing should be retained and repaired.4) Windows sizes and door openings should not be reducedin size. Windows should provide greater visibility to theinside retail display areas, restaurants and pubs onground floors.
