INTRODUCTIOl^.
__ 1358850
,rw_^''°2^ December, 1875, I had just finished prmtiug
my first httle volume entitled "Nonconformity
in Idle with the History of Airedale College," a
book of 15"2 pages, with three copper plates, and
photographs of five ministers and two officials.
One of the plates gives a good impression of the
gravestones then existing, and the back view of
the old College House in which I resided, and
the other plate gives the front view of half the College
House, the rest being overshadowed by the Parsonage House.
Plistory, but I
I have found very little to correct in that
have met with additional matter since it was printed, much
of which has appeared in the Chapel Magazine
issued from
1893 to 1904, both inclusive. On page iv. of the Preface
and pai?e 43, the names of the Trustees are given as Messrs.
E. S. Vint, Joseph Briggs, George Aired, W. Jowett, and J.
F. Garnett, besides Mr. Rycroft and Mr. John
Stead. The
firstfour are correct, but Mr. Garnett was not a Trustee.
Shortly afterwards Mr. Joseph Hutton, Mr. WiUiam
Booth
\Yilham Whitley Vint were added. In January,
and Mr.
Avhen the
1895, there was an election by the Congregation,
Vint,
new 'trustees were:— Messrs. Cowell Briggs, Alfred
Ernest Rawnsley (now in Port Ehzabeth, South Africa),
Turner,
Joseph Stringer, George Garnett, Joseph Horsfall
WiUiam Keighley, Benjamin Ackroyd and John Sheer.
These with Mr. W. W. Vint still serve, (1906.)
The lady who gave the Horton estate to seven Congre-
gational Churches, Idle being one, was Mrs.
Hutton, wife of
the Ptev. Richard Hutton, of Pudsey, and
daughter of the
minister, page
Rev. Richard Thorpe, of Hopton, an ejected
146. Extracts from her will may be found in Watson s
Halifa.r and in the Chariti/ Beports. Since my book was
subscribed
printed Mr. Rycroft has died, and the oil-paintmg
for by the Congregation has been
returned to the Sunday
School to be preserved as a memorial of the worthy
man. A

jfi. INTRODUCTION.
with another minister who will sustain the work and reput-
ation of Upper Chapel, and I can assure him that the
prospect of success can scarcely be exceeded anywhere else.
As to the Register herewith printed, it will be noticed that
the date of a person's death is not the date given always ou
the Registrar's Certificate, and both of them may differ from
the date given in the Burial Register. The gravestone may
state May 5th, the certificate may be dated May 6th, and the
buiial take place May 7ih. I find the certificate of a child,
Abbey, but do not find the name in the Register of Burials,
so possibly one or two interments have taken place and no
entry has been made. I have printed all the certificates
that have come into my hands, and a few for 1875 that I
found in the vestry. All others I believe are destroyed.
The inclusion of the notices of the Friends' Burial Ground
in Westfield Lane, and of the private ground at Thackley
End, imperfect though each of them be, may lead to care
being exercised in their preservation, and a more satisfactory
system of registration. I have copied the gravestone records
at the three remaining places of interment in Idle, namely,
the Parish Church, the Wesleyan Chapel, and the Baptist
Chapel. Perhaps these may be asked for as a separate
volume. If so, I can add sketches of all the old families,
many of whom have an unbroken descent for nearly four
centuries, and most of them can be distinctly traced for two
centuries. I was expecting to insert some of them in this
volume, but limited space has prevented.

OLDEST GRAVEYARD. 25
She was buried at her desire near her late husband. Thomas
Bannister, owner.
John Lister and his wife left no issue. I think her maiden
name was Mary Thompson. Her nephew George Thompson
became heir, and added the name Lister. There is a tablet
in the chapel.
John Lister's sister married Jonathan Booth of Park Hill
House, Thackley, whose daughter Mary married Booth,
Esq., of Idle Thorp. The issue of the latter were, James —
Booth, Esq., of Fourlands, and Sarah Booth, wlio married
Thomas Bannister, a,nd Mary Booth who married Samuel
Bannister, his brother. These Booths or Listers were related
to Saml. and Sarah Scurr, of Leeds, (gravestone opposite
Upper Chapel), and the Bannisters have a silver cup bearing
then' initials.

26 UPPER CHAPEL
This stone was discovered under the pews of the old chapel,
which was demolished in 1849. I have recently added, with
the approval of my co-trustees, the names of two other min-
isters, the Rev. John Buck, buried at Bolton in Lancashire,
and the Rev. Joseph Dawson, buried at Chapel Lane, Brad-
ford. " Rev. John Buck, first Upper Chapel minister, 1715-
1728, Bolton-le-moors, 1729, died July 8, 1750, aged 56;
buried there. Rev. Joseph Dawson, Scientist, fourth minis-
ter, 176G-1790, died Dec. 11, 1818, aged 73, buried at Chapel
Lane, Bradford.
2. Rev. James Huthwaite, previously minister at Warley,
where he was sometimes miscalled Huffit. Mrs. Sarah
Huthwaite died May 5, 17C3, aged C-4. Her husband, the
Rev. Mr. James Huthwaite, minister of this place, died June
25th, 1766, aged 77 years, Sarah his grand-daughter, died
July 13, 1706, in her first year. [She was the daughter of
James Huthwaite, junior.] On these two tablets are the
names of the four ministers of Upper Chapel, 1715 to 1790,
when Mr. Vint succeeded,]
3. The Cowell Tablet inscriptions like the stone in the
:
yard.
4. The Rev. Simeon Dyson's Tablet,erected 1905, by
subscription. " Rev. Simeon Dyson, 35 years Minister of this
church, 1856-1891 40 years Governor (including 11 as
;
1904."
These four are on the south wall within the chapel, and
there is space left for a much-desired one to complete the
ministerial list, recording the names of the Rev. William
Athekton and the Rev. Henry Ollerenshaw.
On we have
the north wall : —
5. The Vint Family. Mural tablet bears the names of
the following children of the Rev. Wm. Vint :
—
Alice, d. Jan.
29, 1799, aged 2; Mary, d. April 20, 1811, aged 13; Thomas,
d. March 31, 1817, aged 10; Wilhara, minister 10 years at
St. Helens, d. Jan. 19, 1842. To these, mentioned also on
he monument in the yard, there is added the name of Jane,
toungest daughter, born June 13, 1818, died Dec. 9, 1895.

graveyards near us namely, the Quakers' Ground in West-
field Lane, and Brown's Private Burial Ground at Thackley.
General Eemaeks.
After long experience I have come to the conclusion that
there is not a satisfactory Burial Register in the West Riding
of Yorkshire, and probably not one in the British Isles,
either Conformist or Nonconformist. I am compelled to
(3) its cost, (4) the amount (if any) paid on the admission of
a monument thereon, (5) the name in full of each person
interred, (6) the age of such person, (7) the relationship to
the owner of the grave, or some genealogical note for identi-
fication, and (8) the disease which led to death; and jDossibly,
as in some old registers, (9) the trade or occupation,
A stranger standing at the foot of a grave-mound should
be able to find out the number of that particular grave, and
then refer to the Register, which at a glance will indicate
the names and descriptions of all the persons interred in
that particular grave.
I own a grave in Lightcliffe churchyard, and another in
Elland churchyard, but I could not place a gravestone on
either plot, because no person living has the means of indi-
cating tbe exact spot. Where is there a church yard with a
plan ? Where is there a cemetery,
private,—
— public, parochial, or
where you see by the books how many are interred
in any particular grave, without wading through hundreds
of pages ? And not one in a hundred registers will help you
even then.
To my mind the easiest way is to divide the ground into
moderate-sized oblong plots having the letters A to Z painted
on two opposite sides, and figures 1, 2, 3, &c., painted on the
otber two opposite sides. Thus G4 would be a reference to
a page in the Register marked G4, on which all particulars
are given. A Cash Book and the Burial Certificates will be
sufficient for the annual casting up of accounts, received and
paid.
However much fault I have found with the keeping and
preservation of Parish Registers, I have far more to charge
against Nonconformists generally. The Society of Friends
(Quakers), have been the best in making true records of
their membership, burials, &c., but even they leave much to
be desired.
We can go to any parish church and find the registers
carefully locked in safes, though much remissness did form-
erly exist. For historical purposes we may search those
registers by leave of the Vicar, on paying a trifle to the
Sexton or Clerk for tbe time that they devote in w^aiting
upon us, and we hope that, at some early date, all the oldest
books (say anterior to 1812,) will be safely housed under
careful supervision at County Record Offices, to be established
