Dear Ms. McCarron,

Humble apologies for sending the following cc: to an incorrect address (Suzanne.McCarron@ExxonMobil.com).
I just now learned that I inadvertently omitted your middle initial, which is standard ExxonMobil format.
My recent emails to Mr. Tillerson have a particularly important message leading up to his retirement, and I believe you and Mr..
Woods would also be well advised to consider my requests.
You and Mr. Woods have roughly 15-16 years remaining in your careers, which coincidentally is the time remaining for the
nations of the world to wind down our combustion of carbon-based fuels.
You and Mr. Woods, I believe, should make it your priority to end your careers managing a gradual and predictable decline in
fossil fuels on a transparent schedule counting down to zero refineries producing liquid fuels materials for making plastics,
chemicals and building materials that would not be burned (i.e., not releasing CO2) excepted.
Following is the first email dated September 23, six months from Mr. TIllersons 65th birthday.
Ultimately, I would hope to meet with one or all three of you to clarify my intentions for your success.
Best regards,
Doug Grandt

Dear Mr. Tillerson,

.

I want to be the first to wish you a happy 65th birthday.

.

ExxonMobil policy requires that you retire in 6 months.

.

Your final 181 days are crucial to the legacy you leave.
.

You have a fundamental Eagle Scout code of ethics ...

.

You must leave the campsite cleaner than you found it.
.

Your Energy Outlook 2016 will despoil the climate.

.

It is a declaration of war on civilization, all of humanity.

.

You eloquently argue for a revenue neutral carbon tax.

.

But you have said I dont think we are to that point yet.
.

An intelligent being can observe we are to that point now.

.

You are now morally obliged to stand up and speak out.

.

It is time to call on the industry to begin retiring refineries.

.

The true metric of success is to count to zero by 2030.

Sincerely yours,
.

CO2 increase is more than 100 times faster than

anything observed in the ice core record that goes
back 800,000 years. This will continue as long as
fossil fuel consumption remains at its current high
level worldwide.
For most of human evolution, CO2 levels hovered
around 278 ppm, helping to maintain the global
climate in a relatively stable state conducive to
agriculture and the growth of human populations. That
all changed starting in the 1850s with massive
deforestation around the world. Then in the 1950s, a
dramatic increase in the burning of fossil fuels -- coal
to make electricity and steel, oil for vehicles and
manufacturing -- vastly accelerated the rate of CO2
being pumped into the atmosphere.
"About 85% of all fossil fuel consumption since the
start of the industrial revolution took place during my
lifetime," said Tans.

Dear Mr. Tillerson,

Dr. James E. Hansens letter to Prime Minister Solberg includes

messages that apply equally to you, as a powerful world leader:
.

As a scientist, it is my duty to testify to the enormity of the

danger humanity faces, if we do not wean ourselves of our
fossil fuel addiction.
Issues at stake here go beyond national borders, but each
country has its own laws. The potential lawsuit in Norway, I am
told, would be based on article 112 of the Norwegian
constitution. I find it an inspiring piece of legislation, one that
embodies the Norwegian peoples love of nature and longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship. One line
strikes me as particularly powerful: Natural resources should
be managed on the basis of comprehensive long-term

be managed on the basis of comprehensive long-term

considerations whereby this right will be safeguarded for
future generations as well.
I am not a lawyer, but as a climate scientist I find continued
Arctic oil exploration to be clearly at odds with the well-being
of future generations.

Mull this over; ponder how you want others to remember you:
.

As a grandfather, I urge you to consider our common future,

giving it more weight than shortsighted extension of your
countrys dependence on oil. Norway has know-how and
technology to become a major economic player in the
sustainable low-carbon world of the future.

nations of the world to wind down our combustion of carbon-based fuels.
Following is the twenty-second email dated October 24, 150 days from Mr. TIllersons 65th birthday.
Ultimately, I would hope to meet with one or all three of you to clarify my intentions for your success.

Dear Mr. Tillerson,

..

Yesterday, water protectors took back unceded territory affirmed

in the 1851 Treaty of Ft. Laramie as sovereign land under the
control of the Oceti Sakowin, erecting a frontline camp of several
structures and tipis on Dakota Access property, directly on the
proposed path of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).
.

"Mekasi Camp-Horinek, an Oceti Sakowin camp coordinator

states, Today, the Oceti Sakowin has enacted eminent domain

on DAPL lands, claiming 1851 treaty rights. This is unceded land.

Highway 1806 as of this point is blockaded. We will be occupying
this land and staying here until this pipeline is permanently
stopped.
"Joye Braun, Indigenous Environmental Network organizer
states, We have never ceded this land. If DAPL can go through
and claim eminent domain on landowners and Native peoples on
their own land, then we as sovereign nations can then declare
eminent domain on our own aboriginal homeland. We are here to
protect the burial sites here. Highway 1806 has become the no
surrender line..
"Ladonna Bravebull Allard, Sacred Stone Camp, We stand for
the water, we stand on our treaties, we stand for unci makawe
stand and face the storm.
..

How will you act in the face of this conscientious resistance?

Dear Mr. Tillerson,

..

Would you intervene in order to defuse an imminent violent

confrontation between armed militia and unarmed peaceful
water protectors, or will you let the authorities unleash their
fury with a likely result of multiple deaths of people
determined to do the right thing.
You have the unlikely position to save lives by taking bold and
courageous action to begin the process of winding down the

courageous action to begin the process of winding down the

combustion of carbon fuels which cause untold damage to the
atmosphere and oceans while presenting inestimable damage
when released onto the landscape and into the rivers, streams
and oceans.
Please consider the following statement made Sunday by
Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman David Archambault II.
You could do nothing and risk escalation of the offensive
tactics of the Sheriff and Police forces which would likely
result in people dying on the open prairie of North Dakota as
well as all along the Dakota Access Pipeline easement.
Or, conversely, you could save lives with a thoughtful and
constructive interventiona good faith gesture
acknowledging the concerns of the tribe while responding to
the "writing on the wall" that demands you respond to the
ultimate imminent threat to civilization, not to mention your
personal legacy.
Chairman Archambault's statement:
.

"The militarization of local law enforcement and enlistment of

multiple law enforcements agencies from neighboring states is
needlessly escalating violence and unlawful arrests against peaceful
protestors at Standing Rock. We do not condone reports of illegal
actions, but believe the majority of peaceful protestors are reacting to
strong-arm tactics and abuses by law enforcement.
.

"Thousands of water protectors have joined the Tribe in solidarity

against DAPL, without incident or serious injury. Yet, North Dakota
law enforcement have proceeded with a disproportionate response to
their nonviolent exercise of their First Amendment rights, even going
as far as labeling them rioters and calling their every action illegal.
.

"We are disappointed to see that our state and congressional

delegations and Gov. Jack Dalrymple have failed to ensure the safety
and rights of the citizens engaged in peaceful protests who were
arrested on Saturday. Their lack of leadership and commitment to

arrested on Saturday. Their lack of leadership and commitment to

creating a dialogue towards a peaceful solution reflects not only the
unjust historical narrative against Native Americans, but a dangerous
trend in law enforcement tactics across America.
.

"For these reasons, we believe the situation at Standing Rock

deserves the immediate and full attention of the U.S. Department of
Justice.
.

"Furthermore, the DOJ should impose an injunction to all

developments at the pipeline site to keep ALL citizens law
enforcement and protestors safe. The DOJ should be enlisted and
expected to investigate the overwhelming reports and videos
demonstrating clear strong-arm tactics, abuses and unlawful arrests
by law enforcement.
.

"Preventing government agencies from stripping protestors and

tribal members of their constitutional rights to organize and protect
our sacred places and water is paramount to both U.S. citizens and
tribal sovereignty."

Dear Mr. Tillerson,

..

Unfortunately, the deck of history is stacked against you

Or, is it fortunate you have been dealt a challenging hand.
..

If you play your hand wrong, and continue to abdicate

responsibility for the necessary shift from carbon-based fuels
to carbon-free energy technology, people of conscience will
rise up against you and your refineries when they find that

However, if you play your had right, and sincerely engage with
people of conscience who are now demonstrating with
passion the need to shift our energy paradigm, you can create
a legacy of constructive response to the imminent threat to
civilization as we know it, and indeed humanity itself.

The conflict that is unfolding now at the Standing Rock Sioux

Tribe area of the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline is a
symptom of the large global problem. You control the decision
making that can defuse the tension and bring the stand-off to
a peaceful conclusion. Simply acknowledge the demands, and
take the bold, courageous first step in the long-term schedule
retiring all global refineries, counting down to zero for carbonbased fuels.
