Description

A total of 85 stone objects was recovered from all phases of activity at Stansted; a summary of these is provided in Table 25.1 and selected artefacts are illustrated in Figure 25.1.

Approximately two thirds of the worked stone (68%) was used for corn grinding, starting with saddle querns, and progressing to rotary querns, millstones and mortars. There are also eight hammerstones, seven whetstones and 12 miscellaneous items including two polishing stones (probably pot burnishers), two spindlewhorls and one Roman weight. These are discussed according to each major period.
