Why do we have to take care of animals and nature? Our ancestors thought that it was "The Mother of the sea” who decided how many animals she would let the people have. She lived at the bottom of the sea and ruled over all the sea animals. She sent seals, whales, fishes and birds from her home at bottom of the sea to the surface, so that hunters could catch them. That’s why she was called "Mother of the sea” But, if people misbehaved she became angry and kept the animals back. People had to sent a shaman to the bottom to comb and clean her hair. As before, it is us, the people, who have the responsibility that the animals will also be here in the future.In 1992 at an environmental meeting in Rio, 186 contries adopted a convention on sustainable development of living resourses. Greenland is also covered by this convention. The Greenlandic nature foundation was established in 1994. the institute is to provide research and advice on the living resourses. Then it will be decided if it is necessary to have quotas or restrioctions to ensure the stocks. The animals have always been important for Greenlanders. Before we could buy articles from other countries, we used the animals for food, clothes, tools, oil and so on. At that time there were fewer people on a big area in Greenland and people could catch all they needed without demaging the stock of animals. Now there are five times more people in Greenland than 100 years ago. People have much better tools now, better and bigger boats, better guns and catch much more animals . Many different animals live in Greenland. About 58 kinds of birds, 7 different kinds of land-mamals, 22 different kinds of sea.mamals, and about 250 different fishes. Of all the Greenlandic animals , we hunt or fish for 50 to 60 of them.
