Literary Stylistics
Stylistics as a meeting ground between languageand literature
The job of a stylistician is to demystify the intuitionof the literary critic.
Stylistics has the goal of explaining the relationbetween language and artistic function.
Its goal is to relate the critic¶s concern of aestheticappreciation ( comprehends both critical evaluationand interpretation) with the linguist¶s concern of linguistic description
Linguistic angle: ³Why does the author here chooseto express himself in this particular way?´
Critical angle: ³How is such-and-such an aestheticeffect achieved through language?´
Language of Literature
We can easily decide whether it is literary, or commercial, or scientific, or officialese text etc.
What are the qualities that make us recognize a textas belonging to literature and distinguish it from anordinary text?
Interesting framework which literary texts appear in--the forms of poetry, novels, dramas, etc whichwriters use and which critics have labeled asGenres.
Imaginative quality of the linguistic utterance
Literary texts go beyond the use of words to conveyreferential meaning.
