RANGATAHI PLANNING

for a cultural explosion!

By Taliha Kingi Rangatahi representative on the Youth Planning Committee
Representatives from the youth planning committee met inHawaii in May to finalise the youth tracks schedule, presenters, and other activities. We have endeavoured tomake the youth track distinctively for youth, with acombination of on-site workshops and discussions at theHawaii Convention Centre, as well as off-site activitiesincluding Vaa (waka) paddling and beach safety workshops, community service projects, a dance night, a talent night, anda series of traditional games from Hawaii, Canada and Aotearoa. We are also excited to announce that we have a group of youth from an organisation in Hawaii (the Queen LiliokalaniChildrens Centre) who, along with their families, will beassisting the planning committee in organising all of theevents for the youth participants. So come September expect there to be events that willappeal to all ages (within our 'youth' age bracket of 13-24, of course!).

Symbols of Unity
Since the first gathering of the Healing our Spiritrtad theWorldwide Movement (HOSW), Nechi Institute, AlbeCanada in 1992, indigenous peoples have donatedsymbols that represent indigenous Recovery andHope to the care of the HOSW movement. At thisstage the collection is made up from Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and USA.The Kaumatua, Chiefs and Elders who attendefirst gathering were of the understanding that thesesymbols of indigenous Recovery and Hope wouldremain in the care of the host nation, and would visitplaces where indigenous healing takes place, especially in the field of addictions. It was agreed thatthese symbols of indigenous Recovery and Hopewould be brought to the next international HOSWgathering and be displayed throughout the gathering. As the HOSW movement has grown, so has theon of collection, which is now kept in Canada. A selectithe collection will be presented to the Sixth Gatheringreminding us of the HOSW journey.

hotelsThis is an NCAA College Football Division I game. USC isone of the best football teams in the United States, perennially ranked in the top ten in the country. There willbe 50,000 screaming fans cheering the home team, theUniversity of Hawaii Warriors. Of course, we will beunderdogs and it could even be a rout for USC. But whocares, we will eat, drink and be merry. The tailgate is simplya huge barbecue before the game where we eat, socialize, and have a good time. That's why so many people arealready feeling no pain when the game starts.
