We use the term “garden” here for farmer’s control in contrast to the common approach of “plantation” which is company’s control. Our approach does not require large number of hectares of land as the company’s core planting area or company’s controlled production land, but will mainly rely on hundreds of thousands of jatropha gardens managed and controlled by our partnering farmers. This garden concept is important to us as we focus on a number of crucial factors which are:
1. Independent farmers that cooperatively joint in “kelompok tani” or farmer group to grow Jatropha on non-food-crop land area. Land could belong to farmers, the community or the government. No land purchase or renting.
2. Farmers who joint in need to understand that they are the Boss or the manager of their own garden, not us. Farmers are responsible to tend their garden and make it productive. Company will help and support them.
3. Farmers will receive group dynamic and technical training from the company. They work together with their Community Organizer that will provide them with technical advises and helps they need in order to optimize their Jatropha production efforts.
4. We recognized the women’s contribution in the success of this program by directing this program toward family centric orientation and applying in gender sensitive approaches.
5. We provide seeds or seedlings for planting and other organic agriculture inputs to help farmers optimize their Jatropha production. These are provided free of charge, farmers do not accumulate debt with the company.
6. We guarantee to purchase all the seed and they will sell their jatropha through their cooperative. Payment will be made using local or provincial bank account or their credit union account. This concept of using bank or credit union account will help farmers learn better manage their money.
7. Farmers will be guaranteed fair price link with our Jatropha oil selling price.
8. Farmers will receive 10% share of company profit paid to them on yearly basis. This profit sharing is directly related to farmers’ commitment to sell their Jatropha beans to the company, failure to do so will disqualify delinquent farmers to enjoy this profit sharing right and will delay reception of other associated programs.
9. Partnering farmers will be trained to understand the peer group approach, the similar approach that is being exercised by the Grameen Bank in their micro-credit schemes.
10. Serious farmers will qualify for associated program designed to accelerate their work drive. We will check farmers seriousness indicated in the productivity and time investment in their Jatropha garden. Selected farmers will qualify to receive early bee-keeping fast growing teakwood seedlings for planting in the periphery of their jatropha garden, and cattle they can share-raise with the company.
11. The company will work in accord with local government to provide necessary support to farmers, especially access to unused land, wherever possible.
12. Farmers through their respective groups will sign a 25 years of contract agreement. This contract is basically securing ours and farmers’ long-term commitment for Jatropha farming and production.
