Inside Knowledge
magazine as a bright-eyed and bushy tailed editorial assistant in 2004, I hadnever heard the term ‘knowledge management’. Of course, I understood the value of collaboration and knowledge sharing within successful, innovative businesses (although maybe not using thatparticular terminology) but I had much to learn. Throughout my baptism of fire over the subsequent monthscertain names and organisations – KM trailblazers or gurus, if you like – popped up on a regular basis. One of these was David Gurteen and his work with theGurteen Knowledge Community and his knowledge cafés. A regular fixture in the magazine with his monthly ‘Gurteen perspective’ column,David has established himself as one of our most valued and supportive contributors,as well being a thoroughly nice chap and a pleasure to work with. He has also been aregular speaker and chair at many of Ark’s conferences over the years. With that in mind we thought that it would be appropriate to celebrate the GurteenKnowledge Community’s tenth anniversary with a special supplement, featuring aretrospective look at some of David’s most thought-provoking columns, as well ascoverage of the past 10 years in KM.It would be impossible to distill every single development in the KM space into onesupplement. There has been so much change over the past decade, not only in attitudestowards knowledge work, but also in the technologies that support the process andpeople aspects. KM has also proved itself to its doubters (although this may still beup for debate) by adapting to the changing requirements of organisations and, moreimportantly their people. The popularity of Web 2.0 tools is testament to this – and I’msure this is still much more to come…In the meantime, I hope that you enjoy this commemorative compilation as much as we have enjoyed bringing it together.
