BRUNEL IN LONDON
Great Eastern Ship-Park, E14
The upper half of the two circular paddle-wheelhousings will also be erected. The starboard one willrise some 2m above the river wall, but then extenddown onto the foreshore. The arched upper section ofthe port paddle-wheel housing will also rise some 2mabove deck level. This will incorporate a life-sizedimage of the vessel's designer, standing next to theGreat Eastern's chainwork. The river wall itself would be treated to enhancethe profile of the 'Ship-Park', by defining the line of the bow and the stern, aswell incorporating the large 17m diameter starboard paddle-wheel.In this way, both the great ship and the great engineer will becommemorated, with the creation of a monument to Millwall's maritimeheritage, in which all Londoners have every right to take pride. The profile ofthe re-created ship, with its masts, funnels and paddle-wheels, will bedistinctive enough to be seen from across the river in Greenwich andDeptford, as the original hull was during its construction in the 1850s. Ourproposed new 'Ship-Park' will be a Monument to Millwall, as well as a newLandmark for London. A group is being set up to help facilitate the planning and fund-raising for thisproject, in close collaboration with the Brunel Museum, Railway Avenue,Rotherhithe. The scheme will be launched in June 2010, on the 150thanniversary of the vessel's first transatlantic crossing (June 17th 1860).
