The Obama administrationhighlighted the longstandingproblem of homelessness amongLGBT youth this week when itannounced a strategy that U.S.Housing & Urban DevelopmentSecretary Shaun Donavan called“the most far-reaching and ambi-tious plan to end homelessnessin our history.Administration officials releasedthe plan Tuesday during a WhiteHouse event at which Donovan, twoother cabinet secretaries and thehead of the U.S. Interagency Councilon Homelessness pledged to findstable housing for most of thenation’s homeless within 10 years.Donavan, who serves as chairof the Interagency Council onHomelessness, said that manypeople who fall victim to home-lessness face discriminationbased on their sexual orientationand gender identity.“What I would say is so manyof those at risk of homelessnessare marginalized in variousways,” he told the Blade after the

President Barack Obamaencouraged LGBT people to standup for their rights and who they areduring a White House receptionTuesday where attendees greetedhim with cheers and applause.At a celebration commemorat-ing June as Pride month, Obamacommended the invitees for theirwork and said their visit was areminder that the change he calledfor during his presidential cam-paign “never comes — or at leastnever begins — in Washington.“It begins with acts of compas-sion — and sometimes defiance —across America,” he said. “And itbegins when these impositions ofconscience start opening heartsthat had been closed, and whenwe finally see each other’s human-ity, whatever our differences.Unlike many of Obama’sLGBT critics, people at the Pridereception welcomed the presi-dent warmly with thunderousapplause and cheers as he andVice President Joseph Bidenentered the East Room, wherethe reception was held.An estimated 300 peoplewere expected to attend theevent, although the actual num-ber in attendance appeared clos-er to 100 as the event took place.According to people familiarwith Tuesday’s reception, invi-tees were restricted to the headsof state equality groups, U.S.
