Anubis was associated with themummification and protection of thedead for their journey into theafterlife. He was usually portrayed asa half human, half jackal, or in full jackal form wearing a ribbon andholding a flail in the crook of its arm[6]. The jackal was stronglyassociated with cemeteries in ancientEgypt, since it was a scavenger whichthreatened to uncover human bodiesand eat their flesh[7] The distinctiveblack color of Anubis "did not have todo with the jackal [per se] but withthe color of rotting flesh and with theblack soil of the Nile valley,symbolizing rebirth.

This item was not to be apart of the STATUE OF LIBERTY!However, before completion andshipping of the entire statue, the NewYork Port authorities asked if therecould be some sort of modification toallow for an eternal flame or light to bedesigned into the statue so that shipscould use her as a night timenavigational aid. Bartholdi consented tomake modifications to the basic cupdesign to allow for a natural gas flame tobe utilized. The torch we see today isactually the same type of cup designused in ancient times for drinking wine.It featured a handle for the cup at thebottom and the handle looked much likea stick. The golden aspect itself wasaltered again to conform to the needs of the natural gas flame. The actual,original golden cup was later sold by theproject to the Czar of Russia, CzarNicholas.In 1917 during the Russian revolution the Communist government tookpossession of it. The cup has remained in Russian hands but in 1997 wasreportedly offered for sale by the Russian government to help pay off Russia'sforeign debts. This author has not been able to determine whether or not thecup was actually sold or not. It is only known that the cup is still in existence.
