The "Elder Sign" and its Occult Associations in Arab MagicThe "Elder Sign" and its Occult Associations in Arab MagicThe "Elder Sign" and its Occult Associations in Arab MagicThe "Elder Sign" and its Occult Associations in Arab Magic
by Ryan Parker © 2010The
Elder Sign
is sometimes confused with the
Pnakotic Pentagram
and theswastika-like
Sign of the Old Ones
. However, the actual
Elder Sign
is a symbolwhich is often compared to a tree or tree-branch, and consists on a central linewith three lines branching off to the left and two lines branching off to the right:This symbol seems to be all but completely unknown to western occultists. However, it is easily recognizable as a relatively common symbol in Arabicmagical traditions. It appears to be one of the 28 graphemes attributed to the firstcentury Turkish physician
Disaqoridos
(

The symbol became morepopular in Arab occult traditions in the mid-9
th
century because of its inclusion inthe text _

Wahshiyya
is famous for hiscontributions to the Arabic grimoire known in the West as

which hemade via his text _

Below is a summary of the esoteric associations of the

based on thewritings of

and supplemented with additional material, primarilyfrom

Hopefully, this might provide some insight into thesignificance and use of this symbol within Arab magical traditions, and perhapsby extension, the magick of the Cthulhu mythos:The name of the sign is "

" (

)It is a Solar Grapheme [

)It is associated with the 19

The Project Pleroma added this note
I loved this when I read it the first time. I would also add that in Vedic Astrology, the 19th nakshatra called Moola ("The Root") corresponding to Ash-Shaula, is ruled by Nirriti, the goddess of dissolution, and its planetary ruler is Ketu (South Lunar Node). It has a Rakshasa (demonic) nature and corresponds to the Butcher caste. Thanks for sharing!
