As a service to Downtown Manhattan, The Villager Community
Handbook is published by Community Media, LLC,
publisher of Downtown Express, The Villager, Gay City News, and
Chelsea Now.
If you walk around our office, you’ll find that most of the reporters, editors, and sales people keep a copy of The Villager Community Handbook within grab- bing distance. They find it to be a vital resource guide that they use frequently.
But of course we do not publish the handbook for ourselves. It is our hope that you, as a member of the Greenwich Village community — West Village, East Village and Lower East Side — will also see it as an invaluable resource. It is full of essential information that can enable residents to take control of their lives, whether it is finding the address of a public official, identifying an organization that needs your help, or finding an organization that can help you. Our exten- sive listings include public officials and agencies, com- munity boards, religious institutions, political organi- zations and educational and youth organizations. We also include advertisements from your local stores and businesses, the type of businesses and organizations that make a neighborhood vital and livable.
In this year’s handbook, we feature New York’s Top 20 Books, by Stephen Wolf. These books not only shaped New York for the generations, their words resonated around the world and impacted our entire nation. The backdrop was Lower Manhattan, where this great city was born. And like a good book Lower Manhattan is an incredible reflection of freedom lov- ing people.
This handbook is for you, our readers, and we hope it will be a useful resource and problem solver for you. Please let us know what you think of it. If for some reason we have neglected to list your organiza- tion, we’re happy to add it to our next edition.
