 About RDSO
INTRODUCTION:-
Railways were introduced in India in 1853 and as their developmentprogressed through to the twentieth century, several company managedsystems grew up.To enforce standardisation and co-ordination amongstvarious railway systems, the Indian Railway Conference Association(IRCA)was set up in 1903, followed by the Central Standards Office (CSO) in 1930,for preparation of designs, standards and specifications. However, tillindependence, most of the designs and manufacture of railway equipmentswas entrusted to foreign consultants. With Independence and the resultantphenomenal increase in countrys industrial and economic activity, whichincreased the demand of rail transportation - a new organisation calledRailway Testing and Research Centre (RTRC) was setup in 1952 at Lucknow, for testing and conducting appliedresearch for development of railway rollingstock, permanent way etc.Central Standards Office (CSO) and the Railway Testing and Research Centre(RTRC) were integrated into a single unit named Research Designs andStandards Organisation (RDSO) in 1957, under Ministry of Railways atLucknow. The status of RDSO has been changed from an Attached Office toZonal Railway since 01.01.2003.
ORGANISATION

To develop safe, modern and cost effective Railway technology complying with Statutory and Regulatory requireDesigns and Standards and Continual improvements in Quality Management System to cater to growing demandrailways.QUALITY OBJECTIVES FOR THEQUALITY ASSURANCE Hitherto, the quality assurance function in respect of vendor approval and purchase inspectiovendor directories was being looked after by individual technical directorates of RDSO along with their normal f standardization. To impart greater thrust to quality assurance, Railway Board has approved the creation of aOrganisation at RDSO in Sept. 2002 for Technical disciplines i.e. Mechanical Engg. Including M&C, Civil Engby Executive Director under the overall charge of an HAG officer. With the creation of this Quality Assurance Ormonitoring of vendor approval and purchase inspection activities is being given.
