Stop the Smoking!!
The Bible tells Christians to keep themselves pure because their bodies are the temples of the HolySpirit. This means that God wants not only Christians but everyone to keep their bodies pure and free of allcontaminants that might come in the form of drugs, harmful chemicals and the likes. Cigarettes are one ofthose sources of drugs and chemicals that pollute not only the body but also the soul, leaving devastatingconsequences.
The Ethics of Cigarette Smoking
Cigarette smokers are not only viewed with a low ethical consideration in most cultures around theworld, but cigarette smoking is a first step, and easy passage into drug consumption like opium andmarijuana. Youths who indulge into cigarette smoking are generally regarded as delinquent in most societies, and it is this very class of youths who easily find themselves indulging into other criminal activities likerobbery, money doubling, and other forms of violence. In simple terms, many would agree with you thatcigarette smoking is a bad habit that needs to be avoided. Time and space prevents us from elaborating onthis point.
The Economics of Cigarette Smoking
Cigarette smoking has a devastating effect on the economy. Some would say that the tobacco
industry provides jobs to millions and also pay taxes to governments. That‟s true. But when you look at the
overall effect of tobacco consumption on the economy, the results are largely on the negative. It is known that cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a drug. A stick of cigarette contains 49 knowncarcinogenic compounds and 4000 other known toxins. Cigarette consumption impacts negatively on humanhealth, and is responsible for over twenty deadly diseases including several cancers, strokes, heart diseases, high blood pressure, infertility and a host of others. Over 90% of lung cancer deaths are due to cigarettesmoking. This directly implies low productivity by workers which generally affects output. Employers andcompanies would therefore be spending a fortune on their workers in cigarette related diseases. Though notknowing it, both smokers and passive smokers frequently find themselves spending a good portion of theirincomes on these diseases, not forgetting the cut in life expectancy.Governments also bear the brunt as most public health services are subsidized. This meansgovernments find themselves spending a huge amount of their annual budgets to provide medical services topeople who voluntarily indulge themselves in practices that impact negatively on their health and those ofothers. I find the estimate that cigarette smoking is costing the American government 150 billion dollarsannually as conservative.Apart from cigarette companies, everyone is a loser in terms of economics in cigarette consumption.Does it therefore mean that everyone should suffer for the sake of a few? There are no options to be weighedhere. The answer is, no.
It is true that the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ at conversion helps people abandon a lot of badhabits including drug consumption. This grace should not be ignored but put more into use. However, we mustbe seen doing everything possible and adopting a holistic approach in the fight against cigarette consumption.
