We strive to provide resources for the total health and well being of all people in our care and
employment, while recognizing and respecting the individual value of each one. there was a small white haired lady alone in the stalled car. I slammed
on my brakes, put on the emergency flashers and got out of the car to
see what I could do to assist.
Walking along the emergency lane to reach the lady’s car, I was im-
mediately mad at her family for allowing her to be out on an interstate
driving by herself on a holiday weekend. I approached the car, and

&' had AAA but asked me to call for her since the traffic was loud and she

didn’t hear very well. While I made the call, Rose managed to get her
car out of the traffic and into the emergency lane behind my car. After
calling AAA, I asked Rose if she wanted me to call a family member.

Rose asked me to call her daughter, who was in her cell phone’s ad-
dress book. She said her daughter was going to be upset because she
did not like for her mother to drive alone and had offered to come and
get her. Rose went on to tell me that she would “never hear the end of
it” from her family at dinner tonight.
Now that the immediate urgency had passed, Rose took the oppor-
tunity to tell me about herself while waiting on the tow truck. Rose told
me that she was retired, but was ready to find something to do because
she was bored. I told her that nursing homes love volunteers, but she
said they depress her! (More work to do there.) Her husband had died
several years before and her family wanted her to move closer to them,
but she liked where she lived. Rose told me her family was afraid for her
safety as she was getting older and that they had already been joking
about taking her license away, even though her doctor had told her she
had perfect vision and was in good health. Suddenly, my upset at her
family for “allowing her to be out driving by herself” was replaced by
being upset with them for trying to limit her independence.
Now, I hope you appreciate the irony here. Me, the champion of
the elderly and author of this column about being a champion of the
elderly, found guilty of stereotyping an elderly person, making assump-
tions about her abilities and worse, about her family’s care of her. To
make up for my appalling error in judgment, I explained to Rose about
what I do for a living and proceeded to suggest ways to preserve her
independence safely. I advised Rose to discuss her desire to remain
independent with her doctor. I also advised her to tell her family at
dinner that night how proud she was of them for respecting her inde-
pendence, and about how important it was to her that they continue
to do so.
All in all, it was a good lesson about making assumptions and ste-
reotyping. Please keep in mind that all of us want nothing more than
to be treated fairly as individuals, and not every “cotton top” needs her
driver’s license taken away.

The joy of dog ownership is always tempered by one thing longer lives
-- our beloved pets don’t live as long as we do.
But finding dogs with the longest life expectancy isn’t as easy as it
sounds. That’s because, just as with people, researchers still don’t know
what causes aging and why some dogs live longer than others.
“All dog breeds are of the same species, yet they age at apparently
very different rates,” says David Waters DVM, PhD, professor and associate
director of the Purdue University Center on Aging and the Life Course
and director of the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation. “We still don’t
understand why.”But there is one concrete piece of advice experts can give
people looking for a dog breed with a long life span - think small.
Nearly 40% of small breed dogs live longer than ten years, but only 13%
of giant breed dogs live that long. The average 50-pound dog will live ten

video game review

By Chadd Franklin
Hello gaming community! I have two games that I
want to review this month.
The first is ModNation RacersTM for the
Playstation 3. Every once in a while a game comes
along that I dream of playing. This game for me is ModNationTM
Racers. This game allows you to create, rate and share your own
racers, carts and tracks as well as play online against others. The
level of detail is undoubtedly the best feature of this game. It is also
extremely user-friendly. The only complaint I have is the loading

times, which are a bit long. This is a great game that deserves your
attention and should become a part of your PS3 collection.
The next game I would like to talk to you about is Super Mario
Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Wii. This game is fantastic! It’s a
wonderful game for the entire family. The controls are easy to pick
up on, the graphics are appealing the storyline is great. My only
complaint lies with the Two Player Mode, but that is just a minor
gripe. All things considered, this is also a good game that deserves
your attention.
The scores for both of these games are 5 out of 5. Two games
and two 5 out of 5’s - I think that is a first!

sofa tables that also serve as laptop desks, and so much more!
Today I want to share with you two very special pieces that
are new introductions from the recent International Furniture

The first is a large desk with a hutch cabinet above. It re-

specifically for the scrap booker. It has places to hold paper

Last night I spent the last few hours before sundown weeding my
vegetable garden. I am actually keeping up on the weeds pretty well
this year, even though we have been inundated with rain and they are
growing quite rapidly. Weed control, whether you are vegetable gar-
dening or ornamental gardening, is a huge task any year and produces
an abundant amount of foliage to dispose of. Why not use it to your
advantage. To turn a negative into a positive, try composting. You
will not only reduce your refuse but you will be doing a favor to your
garden.
Utilizing compost is a great method to create a humus rich garden.
You can obtain bagged compost from a local retailer, but bags are
heavy, can get expensive and have to be transported to the garden. If
you have a pickup truck, you may be able to go to the local horse farm
and buy manure, but again it will have to be hauled to your garden
site. By making compost at home you can have an endless supply of
compost to use whenever needed.
There are many good sites on the internet that describe how to

Imagine coming home to find that someone has
broken into your home and stolen valuable items and
ransacked your personal possessions. The feeling of
devastation can be overwhelming for victims of bur-
glary. It’s a crime we are all vulnerable to, whether we live in a city
or rural area, have a high or low income, live in a house or in an
apartment or condominium.
According to the FBI, a burglary happens every 15 seconds in
the United States. It’s a serious crime. The problem is many of us,
through our own carelessness, make it easier for burglars to carry
out their work. A few simple steps can make your home a harder
target for burglars:
• Lock all outside doors before you leave or go to bed.
• Lock all windows.
• Leave a few lights on when you are not home.
• Keep all garage doors closed and locked.
• Don’t allow daily deliveries, like newspapers and mail, to pile
up when you’re out of town. Ask a friend or neighbor to pick them
up for you or arrange to have deliveries stopped until you return.
• When you’re on vacation, arrange to have someone take care
of your yard.
Other things to consider
• Contact a locksmith for advice on pick-resistant locks for your
doors, sliding glass doors and windows.
• Don’t leave keys under flower pots, doormats or other “secret”
hiding places - burglars know them all.
• Keep a detailed inventory of all your personal possessions.
Include a description of the item, date of purchase, original value
and any serial numbers. Creating a video can be helpful.
Be a good neighbor. If you notice anything suspicious in your
neighborhood, contact the police immediately.

Clerk of Superior Court of Douglas County warns citi-

zens of deed scam
Some Douglas County property owners may have received a let-
ter from the National Record Service, Inc., of Northbrook, Illinois,
stating that they can provide to the property owner an official or
certified copy of their property deed. The letter continues to say
that, for a fee of $59.50, the Company will provide this to the prop-
erty owner.
Douglas County Clerk of Superior Court Rhonda Payne wants
the Public to know that this is a scam.
If any Douglas County property owner wishes to obtain a certi-
fied copy of their property deed, the cost from the Clerk’s office is
$2.50 for the first page and 50 cents for each additional page - a
cost not even close to $59.50.
Property deeds are recorded in the Record Room of the Clerk of
Superior Court’s Office, 2nd floor, Judicial, Douglas County Court-
house, and Clerk’s Office staff is available to help property own-
ers locate their deeds in the files. The Douglas County Clerk of
Superior Court is open Mondays through Fridays from 8:00am to
5:00pm.
