old lady in that car!” I looked in the rear view mirror and sure enough,
We strive to provide resources for the total health and well being of all people in our care and
employment, while recognizing and respecting the individual value of each one. there was a small white haired lady alone in the stalled car. I slammed
on my brakes, put on the emergency flashers and got out of the car to
see what I could do to assist.
Walking along the emergency lane to reach the lady’s car, I was im-
mediately mad at her family for allowing her to be out on an interstate
driving by herself on a holiday weekend. I approached the car, and
!"#$%

&' had AAA but asked me to call for her since the traffic was loud and she

didn’t hear very well. While I made the call, Rose managed to get her
car out of the traffic and into the emergency lane behind my car. After
calling AAA, I asked Rose if she wanted me to call a family member.
Rose asked me to call her daughter, who was in her cell phone’s ad-
dress book. She said her daughter was going to be upset because she
did not like for her mother to drive alone and had offered to come and
get her. Rose went on to tell me that she would “never hear the end of
it” from her family at dinner tonight.
Now that the immediate urgency had passed, Rose took the oppor-
tunity to tell me about herself while waiting on the tow truck. Rose told
me that she was retired, but was ready to find something to do because
she was bored. I told her that nursing homes love volunteers, but she
said they depress her! (More work to do there.) Her husband had died
several years before and her family wanted her to move closer to them,
but she liked where she lived. Rose told me her family was afraid for her
safety as she was getting older and that they had already been joking
about taking her license away, even though her doctor had told her she
had perfect vision and was in good health. Suddenly, my upset at her
family for “allowing her to be out driving by herself” was replaced by
being upset with them for trying to limit her independence.
Now, I hope you appreciate the irony here. Me, the champion of
the elderly and author of this column about being a champion of the
elderly, found guilty of stereotyping an elderly person, making assump-
tions about her abilities and worse, about her family’s care of her. To
make up for my appalling error in judgment, I explained to Rose about
what I do for a living and proceeded to suggest ways to preserve her
independence safely. I advised Rose to discuss her desire to remain
independent with her doctor. I also advised her to tell her family at
dinner that night how proud she was of them for respecting her inde-
pendence, and about how important it was to her that they continue
to do so.
All in all, it was a good lesson about making assumptions and ste-
reotyping. Please keep in mind that all of us want nothing more than
to be treated fairly as individuals, and not every “cotton top” needs her
driver’s license taken away.

For some time now the furniture industry has
had “functional” on the planning board. We’ve seen multi-
functional pieces, desks with built-in power and connections,
sofa tables that also serve as laptop desks, and so much more!
Today I want to share with you two very special pieces that
are new introductions from the recent International Furniture
Market in High Point, North Carolina.
The first is a large desk with a hutch cabinet above. It re-
minds me of the old accountant’s desks. This one is designed
specifically for the scrap booker. It has places to hold paper
rolls, drawers and cubbies for all those special pieces used only
in scrapbooking. When the unit is all closed up it looks like a
hutch you might see anywhere with simple lines and a pretty

Last night I spent the last few hours before sundown weeding my
vegetable garden. I am actually keeping up on the weeds pretty well
this year, even though we have been inundated with rain and they are
growing quite rapidly. Weed control, whether you are vegetable gar-
dening or ornamental gardening, is a huge task any year and produces
an abundant amount of foliage to dispose of. Why not use it to your
advantage. To turn a negative into a positive, try composting. You
will not only reduce your refuse but you will be doing a favor to your
garden.
Utilizing compost is a great method to create a humus rich garden.
You can obtain bagged compost from a local retailer, but bags are
heavy, can get expensive and have to be transported to the garden. If
you have a pickup truck, you may be able to go to the local horse farm
and buy manure, but again it will have to be hauled to your garden
site. By making compost at home you can have an endless supply of
compost to use whenever needed.
There are many good sites on the internet that describe how to

supporting one’s community and country. A United States citizen has
certain freedoms which are declared in the U.S. Bill of Rights. In ad-

rivers and canyons. Our country was founded by brave and adventur-
ous people and then developed by hard-working individuals, families
and communities. Explorers, scientists, artists and entrepreneurs have
all enriched our country. But most importantly, our country is a land of
freedom and opportunity for everyone because of the brave men and
women who have fought for our rights and who continue to serve and
protect this country today.
There are many ways that we can instill this sort of citizenship into
our children. It’s simple to start out by teaching about our country
– our history, our heroes, our cultures and our current events. Make
sure they know about the symbols of our country and the stories that
go with them – the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam and
the American eagle, just to name a few. Teach and model respect
for our flag, our leaders, our military and our fellow citizens. Simple
