Our Independence Day
Although we celebrate July 4
th
with the traditional BBQ dinners, parades, baseball games, carnivals,and fireworks, the strict observation of the original day in 1776 has lost most of its importance. Blacksfind it hard to recognize that document of declaration of freedom from the Kingdom of Great Britainwhile our forefathers were still slaves. These words have finally fulfilled their meaning in the lives of Black Americans. Now that the Supreme Court has shifted to the right and the traditionalconservatives can no longer play with words to create ways to define God’s sun kissed people asbeing inferior. We can now all say loudly and proudly the most significant words that our whiteAmerica’s forefathers wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life,Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”Nevertheless, the notion of being liberated from an oppressive regime, USA, has always grasped thedesires of our hearts. We too, believe that freedom can be a reality for ourselves and our children.Our eyes have seen the election of our first black president, Barach Obama. So the glass ceiling hasbeen shattered. We are left without excuses when we fail to explore new horizons.Jesus Christ is the ultimate liberator. He summated His calling when He went to the synagogue andread these words from the book of Isaiah "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointedme to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners andrecovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor (Luke4:17-19)." We who are in Christ have found our freedom from sin.

was themoment that we received Christ into our lives.Let’s celebrate
our independence day.
Obviously, the most appropriate way of observing our freedom in Christ is rejoicing in worship, having fellowship meals, discovering wisdom through studyand communion in prayer. Whenever we participate in developing our relationship with the Lord weenhance the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness,temperance) in our lives. These gifts that the Spirit gives us free us from hate, fear, loneliness, brokenheartedness, anger and wickedness. We overlook those people and institutions that try to harm us,because we are conquerors in Christ. “We know that all things work together for good to them thatlove God, to them who are the called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).”So document that date of your deliverance, the day that you confessed your allegiance to Christ.Work out your own soul salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Afterward, liberate othersby bringing them to Christ. “This joy that we have the world didn’t give it and the world can’t take itaway.”
