guess, there are many other differences too. In the coming
weeks– and especially via our reporting evening in the near
future– there will be a variety of reflections on our recent
connection with Pastor Alexey and the people of the Bethany
The people of Bethany are grateful for our interest and loved our Team being with
them. Nothing was too much trouble. We were diligent in ensuring that they
were not out of pocket as a church and as families for our being there– but no
effort was spared on their part. The hospitality and meals provided were
generous and sacrificial.
Their lives are very different. There are few trimmings for the ordinary Russian family. Although the congregation was probably similar in size to our own, there were few cars to be seen parked outside after the service.
Russian families do not live in houses on quarter acre blocks as we do (and some
of us have much larger plots!). Instead, they live in apartments in unattractive,
high rise buildings which we would regard as cramped, restrictive and
uninviting. Security codes are standard to gain entry.
The composition of their congregation is very similar to our own– from babies
right up to older members. A dear lady celebrated her 80th birthday the Sunday
we were there– and in Russian terms, this is old indeed. Their youth group is
not dissimilar either– many more girls than boys though and plenty of life and
energy.
They know how to sing! The young people sang many songs together as a choir– both during the service and over the Sunday evening meal. They were not just good; they were very good.
They are bold. The church is unable to support Pastor Alexey who works full time
in a building company owned by a church member. Every waking moment is
given to the construction of the church with every spare rouble being given to
