Communicationand employabilityskills for IT
IT provides tools (such as word processing software) with features (such asspell checkers) which will enable you to communicate accurately and thereforeeffectively. This unit will help you to improve your general communication skillsby exploiting certain application packages and IT tools.
The employability part o the unit is all about sot skills. These include communication skills, teamwork skills and other positive attributes such as dependability and conscientiousness. It islikely that you already have the technical skills and knowledge required or specifc jobs in IT butwithout sot skills, you may fnd yoursel unemployed and, worse, unemployable. To identiy whichsot skills you already possess, you will assess your own strengths and weaknesses and, wherenecessary, work on improving the skills needed to make you an eective employee.Once you get a job, continual sel-development will be essential. The rapidly changing natureo IT makes this particularly relevant or those who work, or aspire to work, in the IT industry. Toamiliarise you with the sel-development process, while working on this unit, you will produceand ollow a personal development plan (PDP) to identiy and track your training needs and theaccumulation o new skills and knowledge.

How you will be assessed
This unit will be assessed by a number o internal assignments that will be designed andmarked by the sta at your centre. The assignments will be designed to allow you toshow your understanding o the unit outcomes. These relate to what you should be ableto do ater completing this unit. Your tutor will tell you precisely what orm your assessment will take, but it could be inthe orm o:
•
an inormation booklet
•
observation o your communication skills by your tutor
•
detailed witness statements and written explanations o your eective use o IT.
Where I live, we rely on seasonal trade. At Easter and during the summermonths, the town is ull o tourists and there are plenty o jobs. Everyonehas not one but two or three part-time jobs: serving in restaurants andshops, or working in one o the hotels or around the marina. Come thewinter, though, it’s dead here and money is short.I want a career where I can be in work all year round. This unit helped me tolook at mysel more critically and to identiy my strengths and weaknesses. I nowhave the condence to promote mysel and I’m working on my weaknesses.I have always been good with computers so the IT side o communication is easy or me.I used to struggle to express mysel eectively in meetings but I am now better at noticinghow others ‘talk’ through their body language as well as listening to what they actually say.I am also more conscious o the messages I give out simply by making certain hand gesturesor standing in a particular way.Writing up the personal development plan seemed boring at rst; a real waste o time. Then, when I looked back over it and saw the progress I’d made, I realised how useul it was to keeprecords. I now set mysel personal goals and expect to achieve them.
