Lesson 2 (이것은 부활절 달걀입니다)

Robin is an exchange student from Korea. He stayed with several

different families during his stay abroad. Here are some traditions he learned…

"Easter"

Mrs. Stevenson: Good morning Robin! Would you care for some chocolate
bunnies?
Robin: Good morning. Chocolate bunnies? What is the occasion?
Mrs. Stevenson: It will be Easter Sunday tomorrow. I am preparing Chocolate
bunnies for the children.
Robin: What are all the eggs for then?
Mrs. Stevenson: Those are for the Easter Egg Hunt tomorrow after brunch. I
will be decorating them after I boil them.
Robin: Chocolate bunnies? Easter Egg Hunting? What is Easter all about?
Mrs. Stevenson: Actually, all that is the commercial aspect of Easter, to attract
the children. But Easter is really a celebration to commemorate
the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Robin: So it must be the most important Christian festival then!
Mrs. Stevenson: That’s true. The date of Easter actually changes every year.
Churches are filled with flowers, and we sing special hymns.
Robin: But what does a rabbit have to do with Easter?
Mrs. Stevenson: Actually in the past, there was a pagan festival called Eastre.
The goddess Eastre was in the earthly symbol of the rabbit.
Everything evolved from there.
Robin: Oh, I think I see. So it became what it is today.
Mrs. Stevenson: Not in so many words, but yes, that is how it happened.
Would you like to help me paint some of the Easter eggs?

“April Fool's Day"

Robin: Hey, what are you doing with Tabitha’s alarm clock?
Mitch: Sssssh! I am setting back her alarm for one hour.
Robin: Why would you want to do that?
Mitch: It’s April 1 today, don’t you know about April Fools Day?
Robin: No, what is that?
Mitch: Hold on a second, let me put this whoopee cushion under her blanket
and let’s get out of here before she sees us.
Robin: Okay, but you have to explain all this to me. You are acting very
strange.
Mitch: All set, let’s go. You can trace April Fools Day to 1582 in France. New
Year used to be celebrated for eight days and ended on April 1.
However, Charles IX reformed the calendar and moved New Year to
January 1.
Robin: The people must have been very confused.
Mitch: They really were. And for several years, some people did not hear of
this news, so they still went on celebrating New Year on April 1. The
other people who knew of the changes made fun of them, and called
them fools.
Robin: Oh so that’s why it is called April Fools Day.
Mitch: The practice was later on introduced to America. Since then, we have
been pulling harmless pranks on friends and family.

Woodlief led the colonists on Berkely Plantation in a brief prayer

Tony: According to Jewish law, when boys reach the age of 13, we become
responsible for our actions. Bar Mitzvah is Hebrew for ‘one to whom the
commandments apply’.
Robin: Oh, so it is like a coming of age celebration. Tell me more.
Tony: On a Shabbat shortly after my 13th birthday, I will recite the blessings in

mass.

the coming together of our family.
Robin: How nice. And I have also noticed the children who come by at night
and sing to us.
Mrs. Reyes: Those are Christmas carolers. We give them some money or food
after they serenade us with songs. We have also put up a lot of
Christmas décor.

Chinese New Year!
Robin: How do the Chinese celebrate New Year papa?
Mr. Sy: The Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the
New Year. It ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day is
called the Lantern Festival.
Robin: Oh, Lee Roy told me about that one. You celebrate it at night. The
children carry beautiful lanterns in a parade.
Mr. Sy: That’s right. In fact, I bought a variety of colored paper and some
bamboo sticks. You can have some if you’d like. Lee Roy will make
his own lantern for the parade.
Robin: That would be fun. But you would have to teach me how to make a
lantern. I have never made one before.
Mr. Sy: That’s easy, even Lee Roy could teach you how. Just be creative and
use different colors and cut out unique shapes.
Robin: What else do you do for New Year papa?
Mr. Sy: We also celebrate New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as a family. It
is a time of reunion and thanksgiving.
Robin: So I will finally meet the whole clan, how exciting!
Mr. Sy: You will indeed. We shall give honor to Heaven and Earth, the gods of
the household and our family’s ancestors. On New Year’s Eve, we shall
prepare a special dinner at the family banquet table.

the globe. Here are some of her conversations with Head Chefs and
Maitre-des.

"Korean"

Chef Kim: Allow me to start you of with some Chap Chae. These are noodles
with beef and vegetables.
Ileanna: This is very tasty! The beef renders the soup salty, but the vegetables
give it a hint of sweetness.
Chef Kim: For our main course, we have Bulgogi. This is stir-fried beef in
special Korean sauce. We shall pair this off with Bokkeumbap rice.
Ileanna: The Bulgogi has an interesting taste. It is sweet and salty at the same
time. The rice is a dish in itself. It is so rich!
Chef Kim: I would like to present you with Twoenjang jjigae. It is a stew that
contains tofu, vegetables, meat and shellfish in a miso style sauce.
Ileanna: This is sumptuous! Simply wonderful!

Ms. Roxas: We also have for you today our Inihaw na Pusit. This is
char-grilled squid, and we have some vinegar and soy sauce for
this on the side, with some atsara.
Ileanna: The squid was a bit overcooked. The meat is a little tough. However
the atsara is very flavorful! What is this made of?
Ms. Roxas: The main ingredient is green papaya. It’s a blend of the sourness
of Ilocano vinegar with a hint of sugar.
Ileanna: It’s something truly unique. What’s next?
Ms. Roxas: For dessert, we have our specialty Halo-Halo. With a blend of

Chef Puck: For your entrée, we have clam chowder soup.

Ileanna: Oh my, this is so creamy. It’s absolutely divine!
Chef Puck: We sautéed tiny shrimp in some fresh shallots and herbs. We then
added vegetable stock and low-fat milk. It’s actually a healthy
appetizer. Up next is our Beef Tenderloin Tips with Asparagus.
Ileanna: The asparagus is still crunchy, which is how I like it. The beef is
tender and moist. Your sauce is bursting with flavor! I think its
mouth watering.
Chef Puck: Please try our Garlic Rosemary Chicken. We used dried rosemary
to make the flavor more intense.
Ileanna: There’s a heady aroma to this that draws you in. The chicken is so
soft, it melts in my mouth. The roasted garlic is appealing to the
palate.

Chef Mario: Our aperitif for today is a Mushroom Tortellini drizzled with a light
Black Olive sauce.
Ileanna: This is such a small serving. I hope you have more in store for me.
Chef Mario: We serve this to whet your appetite. The real fun begins with our
next dish. Here is our Four-Cheese Pizza with Prosciutto ham.
Ileanna: The crust is really crunchy. One of the cheeses is a bit too strong
however the fresh basil balances it out. The ham has a nice
smoked flavor to it.
Chef Mario: Up next is our Sausage and Peppers Pasta with Pesto Sauce.
Ileanna: The pasta is surprisingly heavy. It this fresh or dry pasta?
Chef Mario: This is hand made pasta. We use Grade A flour and double yolk

tomatoes that are bothering me. But it is truly aromatic. The bread
sticks I find to be rather hard.
