What well learn

Today, we will learn how to tell stories using data and design. Were going to focus our
country research to look at the role imperialism played, or didnt play, in the African country
we are researching. We will then look at how to tell that story in an infographic.

How well get there

1. Do Now and Announcements (10 min)
2. Video: Colonialisms Impact on Africa (5 min)
3. Infographic Tutorial (15 min)
4. Country Research (15 min)

Why this matters

Data literacy has become an essential skill in the modern economy. In college and in your
career you will need to know how to generate data, how to read it, how to draw insights
from it, and how to present it. You will also find that visual representations of data can
sometimes tell a story in a more striking way than written prose.

By the end of this class, you should be able to

Understand the definition and purpose of an infographic
Use data illustrations to communicate key ideas

So what is an infographic anyway?

In other words: An infographic is a presentation of data that includes charts, graphs,

images or illustrations to tell a story visually.
Your assignment: Create an infographic about your African country that tells a story about
the impact of imperialism.
Big questions: What impact did imperialism have on your country? If your country wasnt
taken over by a European power, what impact did the absence of a colonial power have?
How can you tell the story with data and numbers?
Project components: All projects must have...
A headline
A sub-headline summarizing your theme
The countrys name and flag
Two charts (or graphs) that illustrate imperialisms impact
Two images or illustrations
A list of all sources, in 8-point font, at the bottom of the page
All assignments should fit on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper
