Parts to Kill
When the day bleeds into dusk When the crow walks home in bootsWhen the canvass becomes too crowdedFor our faces propped up in black-striped suitsWhen we find inside our lives old fairy tales drowningWhen we hear inside the voices scratch, tear, and clawWhen we see the party of laughing friends begin to separateFrom our crumbling sculpture now sinking into organic repeating flaw...There are old myths in the Mediterranean villagesOf a man chosen to be village king for a year Feasted and given what he wants for the annumAt the end they stop cold his royal career.Found him and killed him and skinned himSo that the new king can be chosen and in celebrationOf a new year starting, of the sun returningThe chosen son runs through the town with the skinOf the old king over his suddenly lifted shouldersIn a display and ancient parade without chagrin.Do we build up in ourselvesAn old and desparing king to be overthrownWith a wound that will not healFrom a mortal blow of our own making?Should we celebrate the appearance of a new year, New chances to take, New paths to set ready feet upon? Do weGet rid of that which pulls us back Holds us downFastIn self-pity or old useless ritual?Close your eye on a salted tear Back away from red-blooded fear Grab the knife and cut the corpseBefore our inner remorse swallows us whole.Without the old weight I can rise to the surfaceGrab the sky, laugh and flyAbove the trees whispering old gossipOn a new breath of scented lavender dream.
