Good Morning and Thank you Honorable Ministers, Mr. Chairman and DistinguishedSpeakers.On behalf of Verizon and my Verizon colleagues who are here, especially Jackie Ruff, Ithank you for allowing us to participate in today¶s Symposium.Verizon builds and operates networks around the world. In the United States, Verizon isbuilding the world¶s first fiber-to-the home consumer network called FIOS. FIOSdelivers more than 565 all-digital video and music channels, over 125 of the videochannels in high definition. We offer, at present, up to 50 megabits of high speedbroadband internet access straight to our customers¶ living rooms. At the same time,we are building the world¶s first LTE national broadband network, which will deliver anaverage 10 to 14 megabits of mobile connectivity. This new 4G network allows for thenext revolution in anytime, anywhere connectivity to anyplace on earth. And, it isVerizon, together with AT&T and BT, that connects the planet with our high speedinternet backbone reaching over 140 countries.Verizon cares about ensuring that people, universities, businesses, nations andcommunities everywhere have access to these networks²the digital platforms²onwhich the advances of the 21

Century will develop and grow.That is why we are so proud to be part of this dynamic Symposium focused on³Maximizing the Value of East African Broadband for Higher Education andUniversities´.I have the privilege of serving as Verizon¶s senior leader for corporate responsibility andthe charge given to me by our CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, is to understand and promote theways in which the technologies we build will help the world to prosper. The furtheranceof education is our top goal.Through the Verizon Foundation, we sponsor and support the on-line curriculumplatform called Thinkfinity.org, offering schools, teachers, parents and student in gradesK thru 12 free standardized lesson plans and interactive, media-rich projects inlanguage arts, history, science and math. Our business has played a substantial role in
