Dear Leanne,
The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia is pleased to announce that we havereceived a $125,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for our green collarjob work. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes excellence in journalismworldwide and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities where the Knight brothers ownednewspapers. In the Philadelphia region, Knight is a major investor in connecting Philadelphians tojobs and opportunities. In February 2008, the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) launched a newinitiative to advocate for a comprehensive green collar job development strategy for thePhiladelphia region. Green collar job development became a priority for SBN for a number ofreasons: the businesses we serve need a trained workforce, policies that promote green collarjobs will also help grow the green business sector, and we want to create economic opportunityfor all Philadelphians.Following Van Jones's public appearance in Philadelphia in February, SBN convened the GreenEconomy Task Force, a group of four committees focused on Policy, Funding, Job Training andEmployer Commitment. Over 70 people representing 50 organizations are currently involved inthe Green Economy Task Force. The momentum over the past ten months has been incredible and Van Jones of Green for All hassaid that we have moved forward more quickly than any other group across the country. Thisfunding will allow us to step up our efforts to develop a Green Jobs Corps that will provide blue-collar jobs in companies that improve environmental quality for Philadelphians with barriers toemployment. This grant funds stage one of a two stage process, allowing us to plan for and designa Green Jobs Corps. SBN will work with Knight to explore funding for implementation.SBN is grateful to the Committee Co-Chairs who have helped lead the Green Economy Task Force:
