Ten o’clock the next morning Katie was walking by the welcome desk and through the glass panel door that had Unstead Supernatural investigation. Katie had laughed first time she read that and the second time when she started to work for JR. she knew he didn’t give a shit if it was either human or supernatural, as long as they paid him. The welcome desk worker was a young man by the name of Terry Knolls, he had a crew cut that he believe to look good on his young and very impressible face but to the rest of the team it made him look like a little boy trying to look like his older brother. The only thing that attracted Katie to him was his startling blue eye’s that sat against his face that wasn’t too pale and wasn’t over tanned. “Morning ms Ions, how was night” such a shame that Terry treated everyone like their older then him, but Katie liked the politeness “not so good Terry, it wasn’t anything supernatural with Mrs. Donald last night, it was just normal, big rats” Katie said before she walked over to the door and turned the knob “but I’m hoping today picks up” Katie said with a grin that received a very sweet smile. Shame.
The office in which Katie work was an old factory top floor. The other two floors were taking up by a modelling agency and a box storage. All squad members had their own desks, which was all dotted around the room in twos. Luckily for Katie she got to share her desk with her very own best friend and privet investigator Marcy Combs. Marcy had been brought in because she was the only one who had a license to practice law, until two years ago when JR passed his mail order degree and was now allowed to question people like the police, but in two years he’s never gotten his hands dirty and Katie knew for sure that he never will. There were three large offices, two was used if a client needed some privacy, while the third and of course largest was JR’s. He’s beady little eyes had spotted that on arrival and he fell in love with it, or that’s how the stories go. No one was sitting at the shared desk so Katie wondered if Marcy was on a case, if she was it got Katie out of going shopping. Last time Katie went shopping with Marcy that had been at the after Christmas sales she had nearly been trampled. Then she had to stop a fight between Marcy and some woman who picked up the same jumper as Marcy did. Very silly move, Marcy was only a small woman, but when she needed to be, she could put some one down till they wish they were on the other side of the world.
Katie hanged her leather jacket on the coat rack standing beside the desk. Both Marcy’s back up jacket and normal jacket were still on the hooks so that must have meant she wasn’t on a case and might only be going to get coffee or was in the office talking to a new client. Katie looked at the two offices, both side by side, were open and empty. Katie shrugged and looked down at the notes on her desk, there sat only three yellow stickers. Katie slinked back into the standard chairs issued to all workers. The notes had all been written by JR’s assistant, Jody Worth, an woman in her fifties and kinder looked like that woman from the cookie adverts, though Katie had never asked her, she was sure Jody wasn’t the woman. The first note was sent from Mrs. Donald saying thank and that she has the problem under control, which was nice, seeing as most people would have died then admitted that they had made a big mistake. But Katie stood by her observation of Lana Donald, she was too polite. The second note was from JR, asking if he could still charge Mrs. Donald for Katie’s time, to which Katie couldn’t wait to say no. not that she liked losing money any more then JR but she didn’t like taking it for something that was not worth it. The third note was from Marcy who made Katie laughed. Marcy must have been rather bored to go through all the trouble of getting Jody to write out a note and post it on her desk. Jody could not have been too happy about that. It said that she wanted to know what time they were going shopping. ASAP. Marcy knew how to brighten a girl’s day. The office was buzzing with people. The squad was never slow for work, but when Christmas rolled around people started missing dead relatives. Sometimes people bypassed the squad and went to Wicca witches who could raise spirits but sometimes the raising went wrong and zombies acquired new leases of life. Katie only had one rising to do today and she nearly smiled at that, but then she remembered the three werewolves murders, Julius should be turning up soon with some money for JR and a lot of legwork for Katie. Katie foresaw some sleepless nights before her. She groaned and slumped back “what’s up” a chirpy voice asked causing Katie to look over her shoulder to see a dark skinned woman staring at her with crossed arms “my day isn’t looking up” Katie said before Marcy Combs smiled and walked around to her side of the desk, the smell of coffee was fresh on her “what happened last night” Marcy asked as she folded her arms and lent across the desk. Katie smiled and lent forward “what part do you want first” Katie offered as Marcy sucked air through her teeth “how about we start from when you stormed on out of here” Marcy suggested as Katie shrugged and nodded. So she spent twenty minutes telling Marcy what happened to her, including the pointers on the house and the running up the stairs away from the rats. That was another good thing about Marcy, she didn’t laugh at a situation unless it was clearly funny, and she also knew that Katie was sacred to death of rats so laughing at her phobia would not help at all. Then Katie told her about the call from her brother and the mess she might be facing if Julius ever got round to hiring her to find the murderer of three werewolves. When she finished Marcy was watching her with big round brown eyes, she hadn’t said anything. Slowly she lent back in the chair and thought, her brow creasing and uncreasing. She stopped and looked back at Katie “I thought Julius never wanted to see you again, since your outburst” Marcy said with a small smile that wore off quickly “then I saved his ass from being thrown in jail. Anyway if this wasn’t important he wouldn’t have made Jason call me,” Katie pointed out as Marcy nodded before sighing, “Well kid you’re on your own this time. And your going to have a tough time from Julius, he never makes it easy for anyone” Marcy said as Katie nodded and sighed before the door to JR’s office opened and the lean balding man stood in the open door way. JR was a bad throw back from the old detective’s movies. An unlit cigar was wedged between his thin lips, he had the worse comb over Katie had ever seen and he wore white short sleeved shirts with grey slacks with highly polished shoes that clicked on polished floors.
He’s beady eyes scanned the room and rested his eyes on Katie, chewing his cigar for a few seconds before removing it from his mouth and using it to point at Katie “Ions, in my office now” JR always sounded as though there was something chewing on his neck. Maybe he was born like that. Katie rose from her chair and received a cringe for her dress sense from JR. JR didn’t ban dark colours but he did frown upon them. Katie had dark washed jeans on that she had iron, which for her was an effect right there. She had a black jumper on with ribbed patterns down the front. She would have protest that she had worn a thick long Carmel colored jacket, but choose to don a profession attitude seeing as she had been summoned. She strolled over to him and smiled brightly “morning sir that bug getting any smaller” Katie asked and received a frown for the remark. Katie just grinned even more and walked into the office. JR closed the door and brushed pass Katie and back into his wooden chair, he had littered his office with pictures of his wife, children and grandchildren. Coming in here made Katie realized that even a jerk could have a heart. Katie looked down to see someone sitting in the uncomfortable chair JR passed as politeness. Katie stared at the man sitting in the chair and realized that the man wasn’t just someone, it was Danny, which surprised Katie seeing that Julius forbade him to tell Katie anything “what are you doing here” Katie asked in shock, she couldn’t hide it, so what was the point of doing so. Danny looked up at Katie and broke out into a grin “morning” he greeted before shifting his body so he could watch Katie with ease. Katie smiled as delectable as she could, last night was fine for flirting but this was work and she didn’t let anything slip. Danny frowned slightly as though he was studying her “you two know each other” JR asked as Katie gave Danny one last smile and looked at JR, glad to have worn her hair loose today “yes, but why you call me in” Katie asked with a stern look only reserved for JR “yeah ok, you know Julius, remember the lawsuit that could have been” JR prompted as Katie folded her arms and nodded “yeah, Julius needs our help, he’s willing to pay. Sent his friend here, um mister… I didn’t catch your name” JR said before both he and Katie looked at Danny who was still watching Katie. Her skin was crawling but she wasn’t going to let it show “I didn’t give it, and if you don’t mind, but I would like only Katie to know it” Danny said sliding his eyes over to JR, who was nodding. He knew he was still going to get paid, Danny could be the prince of Norway and JR wouldn’t care, as long as he got paid. “Fine, fine. Ms Ions will take you through to another office and take all the details” JR said, no doubt wanted to get rid of them so he could rub his hands tougher. Katie nodded before Danny got to his feet and brushed pass Katie, sending a shiver down her spine. JR gave her a look, which Katie could feel but her eyes were still on Danny who was staring back at her “it’s cold, should we go next door” Katie said firmly before Danny reached out and opened the office door “Ms Ions” Danny drawled and smiled before Katie walked out followed by Danny who gave a last nod to JR.
