DEDICATION

This book is lovingly dedicated in memory of Dr. GerhardH. Beyer, Distinguished University Professor at Virginia

Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg,Virginia. He was former Head of Department of ChemicalEngineering; Fellow in the Chemical Engineering Societyand Active in the Nuclear Engineering Society and theSociety of Professional Engineers. He enjoyed teachingand advanced research, including the discoveries and de-velopment of this book.

Howard Johnson first became interested in magneticswhile doing some graduate work at Vanderbilt University.Several patents later he was joined by Jerry Beyer, a seniorscientist in Chemical Engineering at V.P.I., and SteveDavis, an electrical engineer and leading computer man.Together they broke some of the magnetic code which theypresent here just as they found it.
