Do You Have the Time?

ThisSunday wewilllookatthestoryaboutJesus visitingthehomeofMaryandMartha.WeallrememberthewaythatMarthareactedtoMary’sapparentlackofworkethic.ShewassittingaroundlisteningtoJesuswhenshecouldbehelpingoutinthekitchen.Icanunderstandherreaction.Don’tweallgetalittleannoyedatthosefolkswhorefusetohelpout?Afterwitnessingalltheworkthatgoesonaroundthischurch,IknowthatwehavemanywillingMarthashere whocanpulloffamazingfeatsofworkonaproject.Thanksgoouttoallofthosefolks.SowithalloftherespectwehavefortheMarthasoftheworld,weareshockedtohearJesussaythatMaryhaschosenthebetterway.Whataboutallofthe workthatneedstobedone,Jesus?TheGreekshadtwowordsfortime.Chronosandkairos.Chronos(thinkchronologically)isthepassageoftimeontheclock,therushofday-to-dayexistence,timemarkedbythecalendar.Kairosistimemeasuredbyinsightandopportunity;timenotmeasuredbyastopwatch,butbythe valueoftheexperience.Withsomanyofusmeasuringourtime,andourworth,bytheclock,kairostimecanbeabreathoffreshair.Whenwasthelasttimeyoutookanafternoonofftorefreshyourself?WhataboutSabbath?Burnoutisarealdangerinchronoshours.Kairosopportunitiescanbeanantidotefortheburdenofbusyness.Marthawasdoingvaluablework.Her work(chronos)wasallowingotherstodotheirjobsaswell.ButMarywasalsodoingvaluablework(kairos).ShewasspendingtimewithJesus.Amidsttheflutterofactivityinourlives,wemustspend valuabletimewithGod,experiencingtheKingdominourmidst.Afterall,Jesustellsusrepeatedlythat“thekingdomisamongyou.”Perhapsthatiswhywearetoldtocometothekingdomasachild.IthinktheyhaveinsightintothatmagicaltimeofkairosandtheKingdom.Meanwhile,I’llseeyouinthekitchen withMartha,followedbyameaningfulconversationinthelivingroomwithMary.

This Sunday, July 18 Rev. Dr. JerryBlack will present “The Story of a Re-luctant Servant” as we continue ourSummer Sunday School sessions.This summer we are exploringstory telling through the ages. Weare considering many stories fromscripture and how they affect ourlives and our theology. Is God for allpeople or just those who are Christian(or Jewish)? We have special guestsand storytellers, as well as some of our own youth telling their story of discovery. We will meet in the chapelfrom 10-11:00 every Sunday during thesummer.

We value each child and offer a safe environment where they will experience acceptance and God’s love. Caring Nurseryworkers help make this commitment a reality. The Nursery Coordinator, while primarily responsible for arranging Sundaymorning nursery care for children of infant and toddler ages, ultimately arranges care for children through age 10 duringany church functions.
