Girls honoured for protesting child marriage

Five girls receiving Savrtri Bai Phule Memorial awards in Varanasi on Sunday

People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) in association with Denmark-based NGO Research & Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victim (RCT) held a seminar on the birth anniversary of late senior journalist Sushil Tripathi on Sunday at Kamesh Hut in Jagatganj here. Five girls were honoured for protesting child marriage and 15 victims of police atrocity, while the organisations also announced fellowship to three journalists

including one of English media.

Expressing their views, the participants recalled the contribution of late journalist in the field of media and said that he fought for the cause of poor and victim through his pen.

The late journalist had raised issues related to downtrodden and victims of any category candidly, he said.

On the occasion five girls - Chanda, Jyoti, Puja, Vimala and Madhuri - who fought against child marriage were also honoured, while 15 victims of violence and police

atrocity were also honoured.

The organisers also announced media fellowship of Rs 1.2 lakh each to three journalists including two from Hindi and one from English media for two years.

Among those who spoke included Mayor Kaushlendra Singh, socialist leader Mohan Prakash, Shiv Kumar, Kunwar Suresh and Vijay Narayan. Ashok Anand conducted the proceedings and PVCHR's executive director Dr Lenin proposed vote of thanks. Many were present on the occasion including Shruti and Anup Srivastava.
