Bison Mows Deacon’s Lawn
Now That Is A Strange Sight to Behold!
by Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
 Join us for
Summer Sunday School for Adults
Sunday mornings at 10 in the Chapel
July 25th
—Jerry Black presents The Story of a Madman (mark 5:1-20, the maniac who becomes a missionary).
August 1
—Chris Shorow will trace the story of faith throughoutscripture. The narrative in our Bible shows how the people of faith were alternately faithful and unfaithful throughout their history. Howhave we changed? Is this our story as well?
August 8
—Diane Ball presents “The Story of Songs.” Diane willsing and tell the story of many songs of faith through the years.
August 15
—Special Guest—Jahruba. As a finale to the summer children, youth and adults will join together in FellowshipHall for a drumming circle with Jahruba! This gifted storyteller and drummer will draw us all in with wise stories and rhthyms. With audience articipation, he will lead us in drumming and folk stories that touch the heart. He will join us in our 9 and 11am worship services as well. What a wonderful way to wrap up our summer of learning! In case you haven’t seen it, there is a wonderful video on the Oklahoma City Thunder’s website. Ourown David Smith, moderator of the deacons, won the Clean Air Contest and its grand prize of a cord-less electric lawn mower. David will now be environmentally friendly as he cuts his grass. Congratu-lations, David. The amazing thing in all of this was the delivery of the mower. Rumble the Bison, OKC’smascot, and the reigning NBA Mascot of the Year, came to personally give the mower to David. Andthen he started to mow David’s lawn. Not too impressed? You should be. It was nightmarish hot onthat day. A day when I don’t even want to be mowing in shorts and a T-shirt. But Rumble, or who-ever is brave enough to wear that costume, was sporting an outfit that would make you sweat on a snowy day. Wearing a bisoncostume in near 100 degree weather qualifies you, at least in my book, for the funny farm. The video showed the job that Rumble did on David’s lawn. It was not pretty. I suppose it’s very difficult to do a good job mowing when you can’t see very well out of your costume and the heat is beginning to make your head spin. But he gave ita try.I thought it was ironic that Rumble came to serve David. After all, as moderator of our deacons, David knows what itmeans to serve; he does it well and he does it often. The term diakonos means to serve. We are all called to be servants of oneanother, just as Jesus came serving us. To be honest, in this heat, I would let Rumble mow my yard any day of the week. ButI thought it was a good reminder to see Rumble reaching out to serve. Perhaps in the midst of this heat, it is an especially goodtime to remember our call to service.Congratulations on your win, David. And I hope the rest of us can learn a lesson from a crazy bison.
