My first job out of law school was working for theareas only federal district judge, in a smallcourthouse in Northern Michigan. Thecourthouse was in a post office building and, inorder to get inside of the courthouse, you neededto pass through an X-ray machine that was staffedby two guards. The guards were older men, probably in their late 50s, who had formerlyworked for the Detroit police department.

O
ne of the guards was always incrediblybored, and was therefore always looking toget into long conversations. My job kept mepretty busy, but one day I decided to sitdown and start chatting with him. I was gladI did because it turned out to be one of themost interesting conversations I had everhad.
