AnOpenLetterfromtheStaff...
Much confusion exists withinChristian circles today due largely to themisuse and misunderstanding of the termsHebrew, Israelite and Jew.Much of the confusion arises becausethe nation of Israel was split into two separatekingdoms under the rule of Rehoboam andJeroboam -- see I Kings 11 and 12.As a result, care must be taken todeterminetheintendedmeaningofthesetermsaccording to the overall CONTEXT withinwhich they are used in the Bible. For example, the terms Jew and Judean are not equivalent --orevencloselyrelated.Yetmanytreatthemassuch. Some say the Judeans were Israelites, otherssaythatpartofthemwereIsraelites, andstillothersclaimnoneofthemwereIsraelites! They can’t all be right!Another problem causing thisconfusion and misunderstanding is the fact of inconsistencies in the translation of the Bible-- a problem that must be identified andcorrectedifanaccurateunderstandingoftheseterms is to be attained.Another key to this problem is the factthat the people known as “Jews” today do notconstitute a single race, but are a multi-ethnic people -- many of which are products of considerable racial mixing. While there aresome who can trace their ancestry to Israel’sson Judah, and thereby justify their racialname “Jew” as understood today, many are aresult of mixing with a group known as theKhazars. Others, such as the Ethiopian “Jews”have, of course, a heavy mixing with black African descendants of Ham.In this lesson we will closely analyzethe names “Hebrew,” “Israel(ite)” and “Jew”to clarify their meanings as found in the Bible. We trust you will find this a highly rewardingexperience.
