SECTION A
Answer all question
Jawab semua soalan

1.. A student carries out an experiment to find out the relationship between the
change in length, y, of a spring and mass, m, of the load on the spring. The
arrangement of the apparatus for the experiment is shown in Figure 1. The length of
the spring when a load is placed on the piston is I.

Figure 1

At the beginning of the experiment there is no load. The length of the spring is l0.
The actual length of /0 is shown in Figure 2.

The experiment is repeated by using loads with mass, m, equal to 0.5 kg, 1.0 kg, 1.5
kg, 2.0 kg and 2.5 kg. The actual lengths of the spring when the different masses are
used are shown in Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5, Figure 6 and Figure 7.

1
This diagram shows the actual lengths of the spring.

[1 mark]
(iii) constant variable
_____________________________________________________________________
[l mark]
(b) Measure I0. shown in Figure 2 .

I0 = ____________
[1 mark]

Measure the lengths I of the spring in Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5, Figure 6 and Figure 7 when
different load are used.

In each case, calculate the change in length, y, of the spring where:

y = (I0 – I)

3
Tabulate your results for m, I and y in the space below.

[6 marks]
(c) On the graph paper, plot a graph of y against m.

2. A student hangs a simple pendulum from the ceiling of the laboratory and measure
the period, T of oscillation of the simple pendulum when the bob of the pendulum is
at different height, h from the floor.
(a) (i) Describe how you would measure the period T of the simple pendulum

[1mark]
ii. The gradient of the graph of T2 against h is related to the acceleration due to
gravity g by the equation
−4 π 2
Gradient =
