Revealed in Makkah
The Messenger of Allah recited this Surah to Ubayy
Imam Ahmad recorded from Anas bin Malik that the Messengerof Allah said to Ubayy bin Ka`b,
َََْ َأََْأ ْنَأ َََِأ َا نِإ:
"ِْ ْاوََُآ َیِﻝا َُِی َْﻝ ِـَِْﻝا ِْهَأ"
Verily, Allah has commanded me to recite to you:
"Those who disbelieve from among the People of theScripture."Ubayy said, "He (Allah) mentioned me by name to you''The Prophet replied, Yes.So he (Ubayy) cried.Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i all recorded thisHadith from Shu`bah.
ِِا ِـَْا ِا ِِْ
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the MostMerciful.

َِآُِْْﻝاَو ِـَِْﻝا ِْهَأ ِْ ْاوََُآ َیِﻝا َُِی َْﻝ
ََُّ
ََُّْﻝا َُُِﺕَْﺕ َ
98.1 Those who disbelieve from among the Peopleof the Scripture and the idolators, were not going toleave until there came to them the Bayyinah.
ًةََ ًُُ َُْی ِﻝا َّ ٌلَُر
98.2 A Messenger from Allah reciting purifiedpages.
ٌََّ ٌُُآ َِ
98.3 Wherein are upright Books.
ُُْﺕءَ َ َِْﺏ ِ ِإ َـَِْﻝا ْاُﺕوُأ َیِﻝا َقََﺕ ََو
ََُّْﻝا
98.4 And the People of the Scripture differed notuntil after there came to them the Bayyinah.
ءََُ َیّﻝا َُﻝ َُِِْ َﻝا ْاوَُُِْﻝ ِإ ْاوُُِأ ََو
ََِّﻝا ُیِد َِﻝَذَو َةَآﻝا ْاُﺕُْیَو َةَﻝا ْاُُِیَو
98.5 for Him alone, Hunafa', and that they performSalah and give Zakah, and that is the right religion.Mentioning the Situation of the Disbelievers among thePeople of the Scripture and the Idolators
As for the People of the Scripture, they are the Jews and theChristians, and the idolators are the worshippers of idols andfire among the Arabs and the non-Arabs.Mujahid said, they are not going

"Meaning, they will not be finished until the truthbecomes clear to them.''Qatadah also said the same thing.
ََُْا ََُُِْ َ
until therecame to them the
Bayyinah
. meaning, this Qur'an.This is why Allah says,
َُُِﺕَْﺕ َ ََُ َِآُِْْﻝاَو ِبَِْﻝا ِْهَأ ِْ اوََُآ َیِﻝا َُِی َْﻝ
ََُْﻝا

Those who disbelieve from among the People of theScripture and idolators, were not going to leave untilthere came to them the
Bayyinah
.Then He explains what the
Bayyinah
is by His saying,
ًةََ ًُُ َُْی ِﻝا َ ٌلَُر

A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified pages.meaning, Muhammad and the Magnificent Qur'an herecites, which is written down among the most highgathering in purified pages.This is similar to Allah's statement,
ٍََ ٍُُ َ
ٍةََ ٍَُْ
ٍةَََ ىِْیَِﺏ
ٍةَرََﺏ ٍماَِآ
In Records held in honor. Exalted, purified, in thehands of scribes (angels). Honorable andobedient. (80:13-16)Then Allah says,
ٌََ ٌُُآ َِ

Wherein are upright Books.Ibn Jarir said,
