Julie  Garrod

I  have  been  working  as  a  lecturer  in  graphic  design/animation  for  the  last  4
years  since  graduating  from  a  BA  at  Norwich  University  College  of  the  Arts
(NUCA)  as  well  as  doing  some  freelance  work.  I  started  my  MA  (Animation  &
Sound  Design)  in  2008  and  am  due  to  finish  in  September  2010.  I  have  had
shown  work  at:

Melbourne  International  Animation  festival  2006  (Australia)
EOS  Animation  Festival  2006  (London,  UK)
Sainsbury  Centre  for  Visual  Arts  2004  &  2010  (Norwich,  UK)
Norwich  Fringe  Festival  2005  (Norwich,  UK)

Triptych  project

I  found  myself  being  attracted  to  the  format  of  the  triptych  in  relation  to  the
time-‐based  media  of  animation  and  sound.    During  my  initial  research  I  noticed
that  I  had  trouble  finding  examples  of  moving  image  triptychs,  and  I  didn’t  find
one  single  animated  triptych.

I  set  myself  the  task  of  exploring  this  further  by  first  producing  an  animated
triptych  using  traditional  animation  and  then  sourcing  musicians  to  help  with
the  complex  score  needed  for  the  installation.

The  installation  consists  of  a  projected  show  reel  that  will  show  the  animated
triptych  with  several  different  soundtracks  composed  by  different  musicians.    I
had  only  intended  on  having  one  soundtrack  but  I  have  had  offers  from  several
musicians  so  I  am  now  intending  on  using  more  than  one  variation  on  the
soundtrack.

Even  though  the  same  animation  plays  with  each  soundtrack  my  hope  is  that  the
viewer  will  see  different  things  depending  on  which  soundtrack  is  playing.  My
aim  is  to  alter  the  focus  of  the  viewer  though  differing  sound  interpretations.

The  soundtracks  are  complex  in  the  sense  that  there  will  also  be  a  separate
soundtrack  for  each  ‘panel’  of  the  triptych.  These  separated  panels  and
soundtracks  will  be  shown  on  screens  with  headphones.  (See  diagram)

I  also  have  stills  from  this  project  (see  over)which  I  would  like  to  exhibit
separately.

This  gives  an  idea  of  the  style  of

animation  and  the  type  of  stills  that
will  be  available  for  exhibition
purposes.
