Last weekend a group from Portland Baptist visited Taggerty to
participate in a Habitat for Humanity work day called A Brush
with Kindness. We appreciate the effort made by Dallas and Jess
Mitchell, David and Jono Hein, Jared Goldsworthy, Julia Mason,
Michelle Axisa, and Dale McLean to be involved in this very worthwhile effort.
Last Saturday, over 250 hours of work were contributed to the project by a group
of 54 enthusiastic volunteers. We were delighted to have the team from PBC join
us on this day to assist Ad and Marilyn with their recovery from the 2009
Bushfires. Ad & Marilyn lost their temporary home in the Bushfire along with their
beautiful garden and surrounds. They are yet to complete building their new home
which somehow survived the bushfires. They have built a new shed which is their
new temporary home while they continue to complete building their new home. The
team from Habitat was privileged to be able to help them as part of the Brush with
Kindness Bushfire Recovery Program.
This project was far more than I had originally expected. A Brush with Kindness
was more than a physical task. The couple we helped spoke with us informally
about how the fire, years later, is still impacting their lives. To me it was like a
state of depression, unable to get motivated with the garden which was their
delight pre-fire. The task was too overwhelming to get it under control.
We also had great time getting to know other volunteers from all over the place.
Melbourne University had a great bunch of young adults attend. I was greatly
encouraged by the mature way our young people involved themselves and took the
lead. The drive also gave us time to get to know each other better. It was a great
cause with so many benefits. I had a great time and would like to do this again.
