TUNNEL VISION PRESENTS:A Unique Film EventInside the World’s Oldest Subway Tunnel
Brooklyn, NY – July 29, 2010 –
In association with The BrooklynHistorical Rail Association, multimedia curators Tunnel Visionpresent afilm and live music event inside the world’s oldest subway tunnel. Theprogram consists of short films featuring trains, railways, and transitculture. The tunnel, built by The Long Island Railroad in 1844, lies belowAtlantic Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Cobble Hill. It isshrouded in urban legend, including stories of murder, Germanterrorist plots and bootlegging. Walt Whitman once described thetunnel as, “dark as the grave, cold, damp, and silent. How beautifullook earth and heaven again, as we emerge from the gloom!”
With its importance in New York City transit history and its rich culturalsignificance, the tunnel provides the perfect context for Tunnel Vision
.
The event will include a brief history of the site by local historian andtunnel expert, Bob Diamond, followed by a 60-minute short filmprogram with original musical accompaniment. In addition, film andvideo artist, Bill Brand, will present clips from his site-specific subwayanimation,Masstransiscope. The event will showcase films by D.W. Griffith, D.A. Pennebaker, StanBrakhage, the Lumière brothers and Jules Engel, among others.Local musicians,Ljova Zhurbin,Clifton HydeandWil Smithwill performoriginal scores for the silent film portion of the program. Tunnel Vision is a truly underground affair. Comfortable shoes (no highheels) and flashlights are highly recommended, as entrance to thetunnel requires guests to climb down a manhole in the middle of Atlantic Avenue.
