L’Eglise Notre Dame, Caussade

Leaving the sun out on the street,

Stepping from light into darkness,
Blinded in the cool presence of God,
I came to light a candle for you.

There amongst the towering echoes,

The jumping shadows, the flickering saints,
Each dancing flame a personal grief,
A glow of comfort,
I spoke quietly for you.

Whispering promises impossible to keep,

Crossing my heart not wishing to die,
Head bowed in an unfamiliar way,
Like many before I traded my
Assurances for just one sign.

Leaving a hundred candles still burning,

Unsure, but with one further promise made,
Stepping back into daylight
I found you waiting in the brilliance of that street
Smiling back your radiant relief.
