 This Fall, Select Patrol is planning to deploy apair of bilingual security officers to patrol theEcho Park business district on foot. Initialcoverage will be limited to three days a week(Thursday-Saturday), from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. The concept of the foot patrol is based on thevery popular foot beat provided intermittentlyby the LAPD. Early in September, Select Patroldistributed a survey in both English and Spanishto business owners throughout the Echo Parkbusiness community. The survey asked businessowners their opinions about the foot beat andabout general safety in the area. Surveyresponses showed support for the concept of asecurity foot patrol and signaled that such aprogram could be successful. The officers assigned to the foot beat will bearmed. They will not be the same officers whocurrently serve in the EPSA-sponsoredcommunity patrol service line. The primary

Many Echo Park residents
are a little on edgedue to the recent increase in gang activity inthe Echo Park area. In this message, I willgive you as much information as I canregarding these recent incidents, and tellyou what we are currently doing and plan todo in the upcoming weeks about thesituation.About a month ago, an Echo Park gangmember was shot on Baxter Street. Ourinvestigation of the shooting focuses on theCrazies gang, which claims a territory justwest of Glendale Boulevard. The case is stillopen, with no current leads. CouncilPresident Eric Garcetti has posted a $25,000reward for any information regarding thisshooting.A few days ago we had a shooting nearReservoir Street and Liberty Street.Although the victim is not a documentedgang member, he had a handgun and twodifferent types of casings in his possession,implying that he had fired rounds at the
