H.A. Maaskant, W. van Tijen 1947-1953
Dit verzamelgebouw met bedrijfsruimte voor groothandelsbedrijven
was hét symbool van de wederopbouw van Rotterdam. Het enorme
bouwblok van 220 bij 84 meter was en is het grootste handelsgebouw
van Nederland; er loopt 1,5 kilometer weg doorheen over drie niveaus.
Het dakpaviljoen huisvestte vroeger bioscoop Kriterion, het dak is nu
in gebruik als terras van Grandcafé Engels. This business centre with
offices for wholesale companies once symbolised the post-war reconstruc-
tions in Rotterdam. The enormous building block of 220 by 84 metres
was and still is the largest trade centre in the Netherlands. The road
running through it is 1.5 kilometres long and serves three different levels.
Once home to the Kriterion cinema, the roof pavilion is now used as a

Hoge kantoren maken van het Weena een boulevard met grootstedelijke

J.J.P. Oud 1924-1925
Café-restaurant De Unie heeft een opvallende gevel met De Stijlkleuren,
waarbij opschriften en lichtreclames in de totaalcompositie zijn op-
genomen. Het originele gebouw aan de Coolsingel werd tijdens het
bombardement van 1940 verwoest. In 1986 werd de gevel gereconstru-
eerd op een nieuwe, vergelijkbare locatie tussen negentiende-eeuwse

WEENA & SCHOUWBURGPLEIN
Rotterdam Central District, het gebied rond Rotterdam CS en het Weena,
verandert de komende jaren ingrijpend. Deze grootstedelijke zone met
indrukwekkende gebouwen als het Groothandelsgebouw en de Delftse
Poort wordt verrijkt met een nieuw Centraal Station, inclusief Rand-
stadRail en HSL-verbinding, en een volledig gerenoveerd Central Post,
het voormalige postdistributiecentrum. Het nabij gelegen Schouwburg-
plein ligt als een podium tussen twee belangrijke Rotterdamse culture-
le instellingen in: de Rotterdamse Schouwburg en concertgebouw De
Doelen. Op het plein staat de futuristische Pathé megabioscoop. Onder
en boven een immense foyer zijn de bioscoopzalen als losse, bijna
zwevende objecten binnen de transparante gevel gegroepeerd.
Rotterdam Central District, the area around Rotterdam CS and the Weena
boulevard, will see dramatic changes in the coming years. Impressive
buildings such as the Groothandelsgebouw and the Delftse Poort office
building will be joined by a brand-new Central Station, including an
HSL station and a light rail connection to nearby cities. Central Post,
once the post distribution centre, is also undergoing full renovations.
Nearby, the Schouwburgplein serves as a stage for the city, framed by
two very important cultural institutions: the Rotterdam Schouwburg
municipal theatre and concert hall De Doelen. The futuristic Pathe mega-
cinema is located on the square. Above and below the foyer, the cinema
auditoria are grouped like separate volumes that seem to hover behind
a semi-transparent curtain wall.

SCHOUWBURGPLEIN
COOLSINGEL & MEENT
Voor het bruisende grote-stadsgevoel moet je op de Coolsingel zijn. Laat
de vele winkels en bedrijvigheid hier rustig op je inwerken. Maar kijk
vooral ook eens omhoog, dan valt je de verscheidenheid aan voor- en
naoorlogse architectuur op. Het oude gedeelte van het Beursgebouw/
World Trade Center bijvoorbeeld, is een ontwerp van J.F. Staal uit 1925.
De moderne brasserie naast de entree is naar hem vernoemd. Ertegen-
over vind je het beroemde warenhuis De Bijenkorf en de Beurs-
traverse. Deze ‘koopgoot’ verbindt twee belangrijke winkelstraten, de
Lijnbaan en de Hoogstraat, via het ondergrondse station Beursplein.
In de Korte Hoogstraat ligt het Historisch Museum Het Schielandshuis,
het enige bewaard gebleven gebouw uit de zeventiende eeuw in het
Rotterdamse centrum. Even verderop op de Meent loop je de sfeer
van de jaren ‘50 binnen bij Café Brasserie Dudok, ontworpen door de
gelijknamige architect.
BEURS/WTC
To experience that exciting big-city feel, Coolsingel is the place to be. Take
a good look around – and look up, too! You’ll notice the large variety
of pre-war and post-war architecture. The old part of the Beursgebouw
exchange and World Trade Centre, for example, is a design by J.F. Staal
from 1925. The modern café next to the entrance was named after the
architect. Opposite are the famous Bijenkorf department store and the
Beurstraverse. This sunken pedestrian concourse connects two impor-
tant shopping streets, Lijnbaan and Hoogstraat. A bit further along on
the Meent, you stroll straight into a 1950s ambiance at Grand café and
Brasserie Dudok, designed by the architect of the same name.

values so typical of neoplasticism, known in Dutch as De Stijl (‘The Style’).
The overall composition incorporates inscriptions and illuminated
advertising. The original building on Coolsingel was destroyed during
the 1940 bombings. In 1986 the façade was reconstructed at a new but
similar site between nineteenth-century buildings.

SCHOUWBURGPLEIN THEATRE SQUARE
A.H. Geuze (West 8) 1990-1997
De ooit als probleem geziene leegte van dit plein is in de binnenstad
juist een verademing, volgens architect Geuze. Met de zich dynamisch
ontwikkelende skyline als decor fungeert het Schouwburgplein als
podium van de stad. Het verhoogde plein, dat tegelijkertijd het dak van
de parkeergarage vormt, bestaat uit een lichte constructie van uiteen-
lopende materialen. The emptiness of this square was initially seen as
problematic in the densely built new Rotterdam, but Geuze saw it as a
breath of fresh air. In his vision, the square serves as a stage for the city,
with its dynamic skyline as the backdrop. The raised square, which is
also the roof of the parking garage, consists of a light construction
using diverse materials.

LAURENSKWARTIER & OUDE HAVEN
In het Laurenskwartier, met Rotterdams oudste gebouw de Laurens-
kerk als middelpunt, wordt de komende jaren volop gebouwd. De glazen
gevel en schuine daken van de City Building vallen nu al op, maar ook
een unieke overdekte markthal met woningen staat in de planning.
Rondom de Oude Haven gaan historisch Rotterdam en moderne archi-
tectuur hand in hand. Waar je ook bent, overal springen Piet Blom’s
kubuswoningen in het oog als kenmerkend oriëntatiepunt. Op het naast-
gelegen Wijnhaveneiland is onlangs de markante vuurrood gestreepte
Red Apple voltooid.

H.J. Evers 1912-1920
Het in neorenaissancestijl ontworpen raadhuis van Henri Evers is een
statig, symmetrisch gebouw. Met de bouw van het stadhuis werd de
Coolvest gedempt en de rosse buurt rond de Zandstraat gesloopt. In het
gebouw, gelegen rond binnenhoven, is zowel binnen als buiten veel
beeldende kunst aangebracht. Designed in neo-renaissance style by Henri
Evers, the city hall is a stately and symmetrical building. The Coolvest
canal was filled in and the red light district was demolished so this city
hall could be constructed. Many sculptures and other visual works of arts
are located both inside and outside the building, which was designed

DE BIJENKORF DEPARTMENT STORE
M. Breuer, A. Elzas 1955-1957
Architect Marcel Breuer, van het fameuze Bauhaus, heeft De Bijenkorf
als een vrijwel gesloten doos uitgevoerd. Heel anders dan in de door
Dudok gebouwde vooroorlogse variant met glazen gevel konden de wan-
den van het warenhuis nu worden ingericht met kasten vol koopwaar.
Hungarian architect Marcel Breuer, educated at the famous Bauhaus,
drew the Bijenkorf more or less as a closed box. Where its pre-war prede-
cessor designed by Dudok had a glass façade, the design of this post-war
reconstruction meant that the walls could now be filled with display

The area around the oldest building in Rotterdam, the Laurenskerk, is
known as the Laurenskwartier. Many new projects are planned for this
striking district in the coming years. The glass façade and sloping roof
of the City Building already catch the eye, but the plans also include a
unique covered market hall, roofed with housing. Historical Rotterdam
and modern architecture go hand in hand round about the Oude Haven
harbour. Wherever you are, Piet Blom’s Cube Houses make a highly
visible landmark. On the nearby Wijnhaveneiland, construction was
recently completed on the Red Apple with its bright red stripes.
ENTREPOTGEBIED
De Entrepothaven heeft een rijke historie. Lange tijd was dit gebied een
centrum van handel en nijverheid. De Rotterdamse zakenman Lodewijk
Pincoffs ontwikkelde hier in de 19e eeuw havens, het markante Poort-
gebouw en het Entrepotgebouw ‘De Vijf Werelddelen’. Tegenwoordig
vind je in dit deel van de Kop van Zuid geen pakhuizen meer maar luxe
appartementen, kunstenaarsateliers en winkels. In het monumentale
voormalig douanegebouw huist nu Suitehotel Pincoffs. Iets naar het
oosten steekt De Brug, het nieuwe kantoorgebouw van Unilever, op
spectaculaire wijze boven de bestaande bebouwing uit. De zichtbare
diagonale dwarsverbanden doen denken aan de constructie van de
nabijgelegen spoorbrug De Hef.
The Entrepot harbour has a rich history and was a centre for trade
and industry for centuries. In the nineteenth century, Rotterdam business-
man Lodewijk Pincoffs developed harbours, the striking Poortgebouw
gate building and the “Five Continents” bonded warehouse. This part of
the Kop van Zuid area is no longer dominated by warehouses, which
have given way to luxury apartments, artists’ studios and shops. The
monumental customs office now houses Suitehotel Pincoffes. A bit more
to the east, the new Unilever office building known as the Bridge rises
spectacularly above the surrounding buildings. The visible diagonal
connections echo the structure of the nearby De Hef railway lifting bridge.

De plek waar in de 19e en 20ste eeuw duizenden landverhuizers aan
boord gingen van de schepen van de Holland Amerika Lijn (HAL), is
in enkele jaren getransformeerd tot een levendig gebied voor wonen,
werken en cultuur. Hotel New York, Las Palmas (nu het Nederlands
Fotomuseum) en de Cruise Terminal zijn markante overblijfselen uit
die landverhuizersperiode. De grote glazen gevel van Café Rotterdam
biedt een prachtig uitzicht op de Erasmusbrug en de Maas. Blikvangers
op de pier zijn het World Port Centre van de beroemde architect Sir
Norman Foster en de 152 meter hoge Montevideo van architect Francine
Houben. Op het Wilhelminaplein verrijst de hoogste toren van Neder-
land, de Maastoren van Dam & Partners Architecten.

P. Blom 1978-1984
Architect Piet Blom wilde de voetganger over de drukke Blaak leiden
via ‘het Blaakse Bos’, een brug bebouwd met kubuswoningen. De
Kijkkubus laat als volledig ingerichte modelwoning zien hoe het is om
te wonen tussen scheve muren. Blijven slapen in een kubus kan ook,
in het onlangs geopende hostel Stayokay. De woontoren hiernaast,
het ‘potlood’, is eveneens door Blom ontworpen. Onder de kubuswo-
ningen is aan de Oudehaven met behulp van mediterrane vormen een
uitgaansgebied gecreëerd. Architect Piet Blom wanted to guide people
on foot across the busy Blaak transport hub via the Blaakse Bos, a pe-
destrian bridge with cube houses all along one side. The Kijkkubus
Museum House is a completely furnished model home. Hostel Stayokay
recently opened in the larger cubes. The tall, narrow residential tower
known as the ‘pencil’ was also designed by Blom. Under the cube houses,
Mediterranean-style waterfront cafés and restaurants have sprung up

Met zijn hoogte van 45 meter en elf verdiepingen was deze eerste
Nederlandse ‘wolkenkrabber’ naar Amerikaans voorbeeld een belang-
rijk symbool voor de daadkracht en vernieuwingszin van Rotterdam.
Mede door een openbaar uitkijkplatform op het dak was het gebouw
zeer populair bij de Rotterdammers. Soaring eleven floors to a height of
45 metres, this was the first Dutch ‘skyscraper’ following the American
example. It is an important symbol of the energy and drive for inno-
vation so characteristic of Rotterdam. This building was very popular with
the locals, not least because of the panorama platform on the roof which

P. Joosting 1924-1927
Van de weinige hefbruggen die Nederland telt is De Hef in ieder geval
de meest spectaculaire: een staaltje pure ingenieurskunst. Door de
aanleg van de spoortunnel onder de Maas werd de brug overbodig,
maar deze bleef behouden als rijksmonument. This is definitely the most
spectacular lifting bridge in the Netherlands, one of the few still in exis-
tence in this country: a masterly example of pure engineering art and
skill. When the railway tunnel underneath the Maas River was completed,
the De Hef bridge became superfluous, but it was preserved as a national

JHK Architecten 2000-2005
Het nieuwe hoofdkantoor van Unilever Nederland is 133 meter lang
en ‘zweeft’ 25 meter boven het oude fabriekscomplex van Blue Band.
Behalve een slim idee om ruimte te sparen is het bruggebouw ook een
spectaculair voorbeeld van prefabricage. De complete staalconstructie
is naast de locatie in elkaar gezet en daarna naar zijn definitieve plek
gerold. The new head office of Unilever Netherlands is 133 metres long
and ‘floats’ 25 metres above the old margarine factory complex. Not just
a smart idea for making the best use of the available space, this bridge
building is also a spectacular example of prefabrication. The entire steel
construction was assembled next to the site before it was rolled to its

Bolles + Wilson 1996-2001
De materialen en vormen van het nieuwe Luxor Theater zijn een mix
van het robuuste scheepvaartverleden met de intieme, feestelijke theater-
sfeer. Rondom de grote theaterzaal ligt een stelsel van foyers en trappen.
Een spectaculaire hellingbaan voor vrachtwagens cirkelt aan de buiten-

In just a few years’ time, the place where thousands of emigrants boarded
the ships of the Holland-America Line in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries has been transformed into a lively area combining business,
housing and culture. Hotel New York, Las Palmas (which now houses the

De Kunsthal is een grote expositieruimte voor wisselende tentoonstel-
lingen. Het gebouw is opgebouwd rond een spiraalsgewijs stelsel van
hellingbanen. De diverse onderdelen lijken luchtig op elkaar gestapeld,
waarbij verschillende contrasterende materialen zijn gebruikt; duur en
goedkoop, verfijnd en alledaags. The Kunsthal is not a museum with a
permanent collection, it is a large exhibition space. The building is built
around a spiralling system of slopes. The various parts are seemingly
stacked on top of each other in a light and easy fashion, using different
materials that highlight contrasts between expensive and cheap, refined
