This summer is HOT, Hot, hot! Some likeit … others (like me) long for the cool, and even more important, dry breezes.Whatever your heat tolerance, it is summerin Heritage Hill and the best time to porchor stoop sit. Enjoy your neighbors with thisidle time – It’s too hot to do much else!

Great neighbors, Kathi Barkan and NikkiHoort and their band of Garden Tourvolunteers, did it all for the 2010 GardenTour. It was a beautiful weekend and peoplereally appreciated the glorious gardens inHeritage Hill. Thanks so much for raising$3,900 for the Association.

Hats off too to Steve Yared for rounding upall needs for the Association’s participationin the Texas Hold-em at TJ’s Charity GameRoom. This is a no-glory fundraiser andnot really associated with the Heritage Hillneighborhood, but it works. Volunteersstaffed the money side of the event; sellingand redeeming poker chips, signing upparticipants for the tournament. Thanks tothe 16 volunteers for earning $3071 for theAssociation’s programs.

ArtPrize will also behappening and there will be over 40 artistsshowcasing their work in our neighborhood. These are two big events and two great reasons to invite your out-of-town friendsand family to enjoy our cool city!

And Spring 2011 Tour Follows Hot on the Heels of Our Final Fall Tour

As you read this Heritage Hill AnnualWeekend Tour of Homes update, ourOctober 2010 line-up is set – or nearlyso – and work is on-going in preparationfor the neighborhood’s inal Fall Tour of Homes. And though it will be the inalFall Tour, there will be no lack of great homes for public viewing or for thingsto do before, after and in-between housetours. During this 2
nd
year of Artprize, many more venues than last year will belocated within or very near the HeritageHill neighborhood borders. Our 2010Annual Tour’s eight to nine homes willbe punctuated by various artists’ exhibitsadding a cross-cultural lavor to thealready great Tour of our neighborhood.A detailed outline of this year’sofferings will appear in our Tour of Homes edition of the Heritage Herald inSeptember. Also, in this year’s Tour map/booklet, we will try to label each Artprizevenue in and near our district boundariesso you can plan your tour around allthe sites – artwork and homes - as youtraverse the neighborhood. While it will be sad to see ourhistorical Fall event disappear - aperennial favorite on the West MichiganFall schedule for so many years -excitement is building among the Tourcommittee, and through portions of theHill and its households, in anticipationof the Annual Tour of Homes new Springreincarnation. We don’t have to tellyou - our friends and neighbors – that the opportunity to show off our streetsand homes in the Spring is the chance topresent to our visitors Heritage Hill at itsmost beautiful.Though several smaller fundraisingevents occur throughout the year, theAnnual Heritage Hill Tour of Homesremains the largest fundraiser for theHeritage Hill Association. Between350 and 400 volunteers contribute tomaking the weekend a success with allproceeds going right back into programsfor the Heritage Hill neighborhood. Some of these programs include block club organizing, crime prevention, community and resource education, land-use planning, and preservation of thedistrict’s historic character. And whileit’s sometimes more complicated thanthat, more often than not, the programsare simply focused on helping neighborsmaintain and/or improve their quality of life in Heritage Hill.
Looking for 2011 TourHomes - How You Can Help
The Heritage Hill Association andthe many neighbors and friends whocomprise the Heritage Hill neighborhoodassociation hope you or someone youknow might be interested in openingyour home(s) for the annual Tour. Thesearch for a homeowner’s “pride and joy”or even an interesting “work in progress”continues. We are currently looking for a fewmore homes for the May 2011 Tour. Thiswill be the irst Heritage Hill AnnualWeekend Tour of Homes Spring Tour inmore than 35 years. When members of the TourCommittee, or my wife and I, come visit - Tom Truesdale
