PadaHari Gawai, masyarakatDayak akanmenghiasrumah sertamenyediakanpelbagai
hidangan kuih dan minuman. Di samping itu, air tuak yang diperbuat daripadaberaspulut
juga disediakan.Padahari tersebut,seluruh ahli keluargaakanberkumpul di serambi utama
rumah panjang.Mereka akanberdoakepadaTuhan semogaroh-roh datuk dan nenekmereka
sertasegalarezeki,kesihatandan keperluanyang diperoleh mereka akan terjaga.
Perayaan Gawai dimulakan dengan :upacarc'miring'. Dalam vpacara miring ini,
seseorangyang bergelar lelambang membaca doa dan jampi untuk membuang sial. Di
samping itu, beliau memohon agar seisi rumah panjang akan beroleh kesejahteraan.Dua
ekor ayam berwama merah dan putih dikorbankan. Daging ayam itu akan dimamah oleh
setiap orang. Seterusnya,upacara dimeriahkan lagi dengan tari-menari dan bersuka ria
sambil minum air tuak.
Bagaimanapun, Hari Gawai yang dirayakan oleh suku kaum Dayak pada masa
ini telah mengalami beberapa perubahan. Beberapa amalan yang bersangkutan dengan

Ketika menulis surat ini, baru tiga hari penggal kedua persekolahanbermula. Saya

The Botanical Gardensin Ayer Keroh, Malacca, tumed into a colourful event with
2 000 people dressedin floral and fruity costumesgatheredfor Florathon 2008.
The annual event, part of the Tourism Ministry's nationwide Floral Fest 2008, had
attractedparticipants from all walks of tife to take part in a host of fun-filled activities.
This event required participants to dress according to its floral and fruity theme to take
part in a 3-km walk in the Botanical Gardens.
Many turned up with costumes comprising giant bobbing flowers, leafr greens,
colourful petals and fresh fruits in all shapesand sizes. Children who came with their
parents,too, were dressedin froity costumescomplementedwith bouquetsof flowers.
The Florathon 2008 was jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia,
Malacca State Government and Malacca Historic City Council. It was divided into a
few categories:Junior Men and Wornen (under 18 years), Men and Women (lg years
and above),Tourist Men and Women, as well as Teanfs.
Chief MinisterYAB Datuk Seri Hj. MohdAli Rustam who launchedthe event said
that flowers could be developed into a lucrative industry to promote the beauty of the
state and country.
