Laurence Sunderland Weighs In
Good Samaritan LawPaddleboarding to Catalina

For the most part, I cover stuff that only a select section of people care about. It’s nice - Ibuzz around in a little BostonWhaler, take some pics, chat withlocal people – pretty laid backaffair. But once the Sunderlandkids started leaving MDR to sailaround the world, I had to, attimes, muscle it out with the realnewsdogs – the local stationsand national press. It’s kind of cool, but media people are alittle weird.Abby Sunderland’s trip ended,as everyone knows, in a verydramatic way. There was a lot of controversy surrounding it andwhere there is controversy thereare complexities. When Zac camehome everyone said “Yayyy, what did you eat? Did you getlonely? Were you scared?”But Abby’s press conferenceinvolved the technical aspectsof the boat, weather systemsand rescue operations to namea few. Controversy aside, shewas part of an incredible set of circumstances, facing mind-blowing risks. So when one of the ex-beautypageant 3
rd
runner-ups turnedTV reporter asked, “Hey, Abby -Edward or Jacob?” with a playfulsmile on her face - I was miffed. There were a few uncomfortablechuckles in the room, but moreblank stares from people like mewho had no idea what she wastalking about.Abby stammered and said,“I’ve been on a boat for the lastfew months, I don’t know whatthat means.” Someone chimed inthat these are characters from theteen movie
Twilight
, a
lm thatSunderland had obviously notgotten around to checking out.Really lady? You’re coming withthe pop culture query to the girlwho just experienced somethingonly a handful of people inhistory have gone through? To someone who was bobbingaround in a tiny boat in 30 footseas, with no communication ornotion of what was headed herway, your question is, “what boydo you like”?But the question, like someothers that were asked that day, wasn’t about anything excepttheir own attention cravingegos. I could tell that this was just a stop along the way to gainenough cursory understandingfor a one-minute segment andtomorrow it would be somethingelse...I hope for that “reporter”in the mini skirt, stiletto heelsand Gucci sunglasses that nextstory is the premier of
Twilight
and maybe she’ll ask one of the actors on the red carpet,“hey, do you think the structuralengineering of the Open 40 iswhat was responsible for AbbySunderland’s survival?”
