Labor Force Summary

May 2010

The Virgin Islands unemployment rate for the month of May is 7.9%.

Unemployment remained unchanged in the month of May 2010. The current employment statistics data set
reflected a 0.3% dip from the prior period. This change was primarily in public sector employment, as part
time seasonal employment changed based on semester break. Private sector employment gains were
minimal with 23 jobs added to payrolls. (Source: Current Employment Statistics monthly survey). (Source: Virgin
Islands VIDOLA$ Unemployment Insurance automated system).

On an over the year analysis for the month of May, payrolls are showing gains, however this factor has
been due to public sector related employment through the decennial census. Private sector employment is
still down, however, initial claims filing has dropped off significantly, and patterns are returning to
seasonal economic trends that occur within the economy. Although, the pace of job loss has slowed, job
creation has remained sluggish and slow, and reflects a continued sign of a slower paced economic
recovery for 2010. (Source: Current Employment Statistics monthly survey).

Note: Employment includes non agricultural wage and salary employment. Data has not been benchmarked. Labor force is comprised
of persons 16 and older who show up in our unemployment insurance wage data working full time or part time and actively seeking
employment through VIDOL. This data set is not comparable with labor force estimates developed as part of the national cooperative
program. Virgin Islands estimates reflect the use of prescribed BLS methodology but are not adjusted to an independent estimate
provided through the CPS (Current Population Survey).
