rebuild it for a deserving family, It is so cool to the follow the process and watch the family's reaction

home has replaced it. What a heart-warming moment!
Unfortunately, there has been another Extreme Makeover happening to the American home.

How should Christians respond? That is the subject of our time together, and the title of the message is
"Stand for Marriage." Why should Christians in America, and specifically in California, stand for
marriage as defined by this Book? Well I think the answer is a no-brainer, but let's consult the
Scriptures, because they are the guide for faith, family, and freedom - everything in life. So as we think
about taking a stand for marriage, the first thing we need to do is to re-establish the divine pattern for
marriage from the word of God. The Bible establishes a fixed standard of righteousness, a fixed standard
of moral absolutes, of right and wrong.

What is the divine pattern, God's original intention for marriage and the home? Go back to Genesis, the
book of beginnings. For example, Genesis I :27: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of
God he created him; male and female he created them." Aren't you glad God created Adam and Eve,
and not just Adam and Steve? _Thank God for the difference between men and women. In fact, the two
genders were meant to complete each other physically, emotionally, and in every other way. Also, both
genders are needed for a healthy home. As Dr. James Dobson notes, "More than ten thousand studies

In Genesis 2:24, God further declares: "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be
united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." When you come to the teaching of Jesus in the NT,
you find that Jesus endorsed this divine pattern. Quoting Genesis, Jesus asked Pharisees in Matt. 19:4:
"Have you not read that at the beginning, the Creator made them male and female, and said: 'For this
reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one
flesh?' So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man
separate." In both OT and NT, one man and one woman in a marriage covenant relationship for life is
the divine pattern.
When a marriage follows God's design, it is good for everyone - men, women, children, the
community, the country, and the world. By tHe 'Nay, before takiflg a public stafld for marriage we OUgHt

civilization in history is built upon the institution of marriage. It is the foundation ofHumsfl socisl order.
The welfare of children, the propagation of the faith, the wellbeing of society, and the orderliness of
civilization are all dependent upon the stability of maniage according to the divine pattern. When this
God-given pattern is undermined, the whole superstructure of society becomes unstable. Any deviation

Second, there is a deceptive perversion of the divine pattern. WHSt is fue deceptive pefversiofl? Hear me
clearly: A~ny and all sexual sin outside of the marriage covenant relationship is a deceptive
perversion of the divine pattern, but for the purposes of this message I want to focus on one sin in
particular: homosexuality. The Word of God, which does not err, is abundantly clear. Leviticus 18:22
says: "You are not to sleep with a man as with a woman; it is detestable." Leviticus 20~J 3 says: "If a
man sleeps with a man as with a woman, they have both committed an abomination7 ... " THey must be
put to deatH; tHeir blood is OH tHeir OWfl HSflds." Homosexuality is an abomination to God. This is the
strongest biblical word for the denunciation of sin, the proof of which is in God's own version of the
Extreme Makeover at Sodom and Gomorrah, which were destroyed in a hail offire and brimstone (Gen.
19).

Again, why is homosexuality a sin? Because it is open rebellion against the divine pattern, the created
order of God. Some say: "Well, that's Old Testament, but ~Jesus never said anything about

~Do not think that 1 have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but

In fact, Jesus basically condemned homosexuality by affirming the divine pattern for marriage~
Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9, quoting from Genesis 1 and 2, Jesus said that marriage is between one
man and one woman. So if Jesus said marriage is between one man and one woman, it follows logically
that marriage cannot be between two men or two women. In affirming God's pattern for marriage, Jesus

Third, there is a definitive problem. Homosexuals claim: "We were born this way; it is in our genes;
God made us gay." They cite "gay gene" studies predominantly conducted by researchers who are

biased and discredited studies have been widely publicized by the liberal media as true and factual. They
essentially practice Joseph Goebel's Nazi philosophy of propaganda, which is basically this: tell a lie

that twists and perverts God-given desires not only toward homosexuality, but toward all sorts of ffi

}V. THE DESTRUCTIVE PROGRAM

Fourth, there is a destructive program. While homosexuals only represent 2.9%a fraetion of the total
population (2.8% of FAen and 1.4 % of "'"OFAen),£ many have become very vocal, well organized, well
funded, and highly motivated.~ They have used the political system, the media, movies, and even the
schools to "mainstream" their lifestyle choices, and they have been extremely successful in advancing
their agenda. Just consider how the attitudes have changed toward homosexuality from the previous

What are the goals of the radical homosexual agenda? They include universal acceptance of the gay and
lesbian lifestyle, gaining special privileges and rights in the laws, "sensitivity training" of our children
through public education, silencing critics in the clergy and Christian media, and securing the legal
benefits of marriage and parenting for any two people of the same gender. By all accounts, HOffiosffiRlal
homosexual activists have been marching from victory to victory in the entertainment arena, the
educational arena, and the legal arena in advancing this agenda. Don't think so?

when Madonna gave Brittany Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera an open mouth kiss? Nearly every
movie, nearly every television program advances rebellion against the divine pattern found in the word
of God.

classroom such as Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy's New Roommate? Several years ago, the
conservative news magazine National Review laid out a litany of examples of homosexual
indoctrination in New England public schools.
In one elementary school, a transsexual was invited into a 1st grade class to give details of his
operation.3: In another elementary school, children were assigned to play gays in a school skit. Two
girls were to hold hands and pretend to be lesbians. One boy's line was: "It~s natural to be attracted to

bisexuality, and trans-sexuality. School-sponsored activities, textbooks, and instructional materials
could require a positive portrayal of homosexual "marriages," cross-dressing, sex-change operations,
and all aspects of homosexuality and bisexuality. Bathrooms and locker rooms could also become
unisex - based on how a child perceives his or her own gender identity. With this recent Supreme Court
ruling, homosexual indoctrination in public schools will go into hyper-drive.

OK, let's just ask the question: Why not same-sex gay-"marriage?" What damage could be done by the
courts allowing two consenting adults of the same gender to join in a relationship and sanction it as
"marriage?" We already know the answer to that question. Take a look at the Scandinavian countries

Thankfully, the Alliance Defense Fund, one of our sister organizations, came over and helped
successfully defend him, but that's where Hate Crimes laws lead - to the silencing of the pulpit and of
Christians. Our U.S. Congress has voted for Hate Crimes legislation, and thankfully the President
vetoed it, but depending on the result of the election this November, we may eventually see pastors
under attack all across America for simply preaching biblical truth about the sin of homosexuality.
So sodomy has not only come out of the closet and -aHd-into the classrooms, into the Congress, into the
CourtsahlHet, but it is now coming into our churches and Christian organizations demanding special
recognition and rights. Where homosexual activists win legal approval, whether by court action or
legislation, they often deny our full rights as Christians because a homosexual's so-called "civil rights"
and a Christian's freedom of conscience and speech opposing homosexuality are mutually exclusive.
Something has to give.

Clear governmental disapproval, both direct and indirect, will attach to anyone or any
organization in California that rejects the legitimacy of same-sex marriage.
Public schools will teach the fully equal status of homosexual and heterosexual conduct based, in
substantial part, on state marriage law. Those who object may find themselves on the wrong side
of the law?

Religious-based adoption agencies that refuse to place children with same-sex couples (like
Catholic Charities in Massachusetts) will be forced to discontinue operations unless licensing
waivers are granted: such waivers are unlikely to withstand constitutional challenge.
Faith-based organizations that do not recognize same-sex marriage could lose their California tax
exemptions (e.g., see the 1983 Bob Jones Universitv case dealing with federal tax exemptions).
Since the Bob Jones case dealt with interracial dating, it could now serve as an indirect precedent
for punishing a Christian college that discourages or prohibits same-sex dating while allowing
male-female dating.
Although the court said in passing that "no religious officiant will be required to solemnize" a
same-sex marriage, such protection may not apply to property owned by a church or ministry.
For example, a boardwalk pavilion in Ocean Grove, N.1., owned by the Methodist Ocean Grove
Camp Meeting Association, lost its state tax-exempt status after the association refused to allow
the pavilion's use for two lesbian couples' civil union ceremonies.
Speech rights of state or local government employees will be trampled with greater force. We
have already seen this in the case of two Oakland, Calif., employees who advertised a meeting of
a pro-family group on a workplace bulletin board already used to promote a variety of political.
sexually oriented, and pro-homosexual causes. A federal district court and the U.S. Court of
Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the "Good News Employee Association" had no right to
post its message.
State or county clerks may be forced to issue same-sex marriage licenses despite religious or
conscientious objections. San Diego County Clerk Gregory Smith is trying to protect the 115
clerks in his office who object morally to the issuance of marriage licenses for same-sex couples,
but his effort is already under attack from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Because California has no residency requirement for marriage - unlike Massachusetts - same-sex
couples will wed in California and return en masse to other states, seeking recognition of these
marriages pursuant to the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
The return to their home state of same-sex couples wed in California will allow for the
constitutional testing of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act adopted by Congress. Activist federal
judges may strike down a state's ability to choose not to recognize out-of-state same-sex
marriages.

bystanders to this point, silently watching these events transpire without any thought to Jesus' command
to be stinging salt and shining light. Well as British statesman Edmund Burke is often quoted: "All that

is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." It is time for Bible-believing citizens to
pray for God's mercy, get involved, lift our voices, and call America to repentance before it is too late.
F or just as the fire of judgment fell on Sodom and Gomorrah, judgment will fall on America. In light of
the Extreme Home Makeover that is taking place, what can we do, what should we do, what must we
do?
Here are several action steps we can determine to take:
Action Step I: Pray: We need to pray for God's mercy on a nation that is speedingtffiffig toward Sodom,
and hurtling toward Gomorrah. Pray that God's Spirit will revive a church that is worldly. Pray that God
would be pleased to send a mighty sweeping revival. But I remind you that the promises of2 Chronicles
7: 14 depend on God's people humbling themselves, seeking the face of God in prayer, and turning from
sin to biblical righteousness. But it all begins with prayer.
Remember what Abraham did when God told him that He was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah?
What did Abraham do? He interceded with God for his nephew Lot and his family. And because of his
intercession, judgment was delayed and Lot was delivered. Just as Abraham interceded, we need to
plead with God that He might stay His hand of judgment.

Action Step 2: Practice: We need to practice the biblical principles for a healthy marriage as a positive
witness. Don't skip this one. Getting a hearing in the culture depends on our credibility. When the
divorce rate among professing Christians is essentially the same as that of the world, we have little
credibility with which to call the world to repentance, even if they are trying to redefine the family.
Christian marriages ought to be the model for a watching world. Step number 2: Practice the biblical
principles for a healthy marriage.
Action Step 3: Participate: We need to participate in our "government of the people, by the people, and
for the people" as Abraham Lincoln described it. Now some might say: "I don't think Christians should
get involved in politics." Let me ask you a question: Who created government in the first place?

Rom. 13: 1-7 tells us plainly and unmistakably that God ordained the institution of government. Since
God created government, would He want His people to stay out of it? No. If Christians don't "render to
Caesar" (Matt. 22:21) and don't function as salt and light (Matt. 5: 13-16) in the arena of government,
then we disobey the commands of Christ and allow Satan to prevail by default. So we need to
participate in the political process and impact our government as stinging salt and shining light. Here
are some specific things Citizen Christians can and should do.

comes next speaks of God's amazing grace: "But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were
justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God," That is Good News!
Hear me --- outside of prayer, the most important thing we can do as believers is to proclaim the Good
News, It is ironic that those who are in the homosexual lifestyle struggle with all their might to achieve
freedom from the so-called shackles of biblical morality and traditional institutions, and yet Jesus tells
us that those who commit sin are "slaves to sin" (John 8:34), In trying to find freedom, they find

Listen, only Jesus can break the strongholds of sin and offer freedom and forgiveness and hope. For
when we turn from our sins and turn to Christ, He will change our desires, He will change our passions,
and He will change everything about us. Second Corinthians 5: 17 says: "Therefore if anyone is in
Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come." And that
is the promise of God we need to share with everybody, everywhere, regardless of their sin. You can be
a new person in Christ Jesus!
So let us li'fe aad preacfi tfiat message! Let us love people out of a siaful aad destructive lifestyle! So let
us live and preach that message of the transfonning power of the love of God in Christ Jesus! Let's
stand alongside these poor misguided and lost people trapped in Satan's snare. and love them out of that
sinful and destructive lifestyle, and lead them to Jesus who can set them free! Let's stand against this
destructive program that threatens all that we hold dear, and protect our children from this ungodly
agenda.
Listen, we can make the difference. Together, Christians all across California can change the outcome
of this terrible Court ruling. Together, we can restore the definition of traditional marriage. So let's get
registered to vote and then vote for this Amendment defining marriage as only between one man and
one woman. Let's stand for God's plan for marriage! Because our future depends on it. And all of

2008 Action Steps for
California Churches
Pastor, you can help protect marriage in California by taking the following actions
steps:
1. Recruit a Leader: Appoint someone who will help coordinate efforts within your church
to promote the California Marriage Protection Act that will amend the state constitution
to say that "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in
California" and work with ProtectMarriage.com (either a motivated layperson or an
associate pastor). It is very important that we receive contact information as soon as
possible.
2. Conduct "Christian Citizenship" Sundays: Plan now to conduct Voter Registration

Use Family Research Council's Voter Impact ToolKit, which includes a Christian
Citizenship Message, Bulletin Insert, PowerPoint, Video, Ten Step Voter Registration
Strategy, Voter Registration Forms, etc.
3. Promote awareness about the California Marriage Amendment: Use your church
media and communications to make members aware of the Amendment during
September and October. Employ the announcement time, info slides, worship folders,
church website, and other communications to get the word out about the need to protect
marriage. Also, the Stand for Marriage Toolkit contains several helps in this regard,
including a brief video.
4. Hold a "Stand for Marriage" Sunday: Before the Election have a special emphasis
Sunday or Sundays on marriage in your church. Focus on marriage and the threat to
the biblical definition in California and how people need to vote in favor of the proposed
Marriage Amendment. The Stand for Marriage Toolkit contains much of what you need
to have a successful event (Full-Text Message, Message Notes, PowerPoint, Bulletin
Insert, Video, etc.). Consider preaching a message or series of messages on marriage
during early voting in October or, at the latest, on the Sunday before the election -
November 2. Encourage your people to sign commitment cards pledging to vote for the
Marriage Amendment.

Seasoned Advice on the use of Sermon Materials
1. Pastoral Warning: There is no substitute for the pastor's leadership from the pulpit, preaching the word of God without
fear or favor, and applying it to burning issues such as abortion, the radical homosexual agenda, judicial tyranny,
pornography, racism, gambling, etc. However, I have preached messages like these many times and they never fail to
offend somebody. In fact, I've had people walk out on me during the sermon, and others leave my church membership.
But be encouraged because I've also had people join my church in large numbers because I took the stand. Always
remember what God told the prophet Jeremiah when He called him: "Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them
whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them." (Jer. 1: 17).
2. Wise Counsel: As the pastor, you already have a good idea what your flock needs from God's word. However, if you
are new to preaching on moral issues in the public arena, it may be wise to talk with your deacon body or elders or
governing board or trusted leaders - whatever accountability group you have in your church. In the multitude of
counselors there is much wisdom. Remember, God's word offends people. Don't preach it if you can't handle the
consequences. So before you launch out, seek the counsel of your trusted leaders, and ask for their support.
3. Legal Issues: Abortion, same-sex "marriage," embryonic stem-cell research, etc. are moral issues with political
implications. There are some legal dos and don'ts for pastors and churches if you want to maintain your tax exempt status.
Check out our Legal FAOs page for details (for more advice, visit www.iVoteValues.org click on Leaders, then on Legal
Dos and Don'ts, then on What a Pastor May Do). Here's the biggie: Don't stand in the pulpit and tell your people how to
vote (e.g., Vote for Candidate A and don't vote for Candidate B). However, you can confidently preach on moral and
cultural issues from a biblical perspective and tell people to do their homework on the candidates without fear of losing
your tax exempt status.
4. Practical Matters: You might want to put a "PG rating" on some sennons that deal with the killing of the unborn or the
homosexual agenda and allow parents to make decisions about young children hearing some of the content that will be
discussed. If you take that route, you might want to provide for childcare beyond nursery and pre-school age during the
message. I have found that parents appreciate a heads up and childcare when handling such topics. Just know that when
you describe a moral problem with any detail you will get feedback. Plan ahead and you can avoid some problems.
5. Perspective: If Americans of faith don't take action on moral and cultural issues, then we will allow the devil and his
people to win by default in an arena Jesus commanded us to influence as the salt and light (Matt. 5: 13-16). That being
said, remember that the way to change the world, beginning where you are, is through the Gospel. It is only when a person
surrenders his or her life to Jesus as Lord and becomes His disciple that the heart and mind will change when it comes to
these moral issues being debated in the public arena (Rom. 12: 1-2). Equip your people to engage cultural issues from a
biblical perspective, but also equip them to share their faith and make disciples, beginning at home. Otherwise, we will be
on defense all of the time and we will lose the battle for America. By the way, that is exactly what the devil wants. The
reason? Americans have a unique Christian heritage, and on that foundation we have become the greatest missionary
sending nation in the history of the world. Let's make the Great Commission the main thing!

God has ordained three basic institutions: the church, the government, Since the legalization of same-sex "marriage" in Massachusetts,
