“You can’t always get what you want” is not only a legendary lyric in Rock-n’-Roll but also a truth in life we all discover sooner or later. We are blessed to get what we want more than most people in this world and last December 4-5 andMay 15 I got what I wanted. The election and ordination-&-consecration of Diane Bruce and Mary Glasspool to beBishops Suffragan in our Diocese of Los Angeles is powerful witness both to the wonderful diversity and variety withinthe Episcopal Church in southern California and to the reality that all are equally welcome into this Christian community. The theme for our Celebration of Ordination & Consecration on May 15 was “REJOICE”. I rejoice!Saint Michael & All Angels had special involvement in the festivities of May 15:
Lynn Headley
co-chaired the Ordinationand Consecration Planning Team,
Jim Headley
coordinated ushers and greeters; many, many Saint Michael & All Angelites(including
Murry McClaren
who brought our banner,
Myrna Ireland
and
Frances Fukuda
who with members of theGirl’s Friendly Society created boutonnieres for ushers who included
Mike Ortt, Jay Launt
,
Steve Dulson,

ClydeDodge,

Larry Spang, Richard Alegre, Bryant Henry
and
Laird Blue; Frances Haynes
worked with the press at theLong Beach Arena) served as volunteers on May 15. I don’t know how our other Delegates (
The Reverends MarthaKorienek
and
Canon Ray Fleming, Steve Dulson, Teri Corbet, Richard Zevnik
and
Lynn Headley)
voted at DiocesanConvention last December, but I voted for Diane and Mary until they were elected, Diane on the first three ballots andMary on the next seven; I am proud and glad to have done so. At their consecration the records of their ordinations wereread; I got goosebumps when Diane’s history included “ordained Deacon on June 7, 1997 by Bishop Anderson for BishopBorsch at Saint Michael & All Angels, Corona del Mar.”Diane will be here for the first of what I trust will be many, many times as Bishop Bruce on June 13. Bishop Bruce willcelebrate and preach during Sunday morning worship, then chair our All-Parish Meeting in All Angels’ Court. We havedifficult and significant concerns before us. As best we have been able to, we’ve spread word that our income was$42,810 less that our expenses for the first four months of 2010. Imagine what it would mean for us to have to cut threetimes that, $128,430, from our program to balance our $590,000 2010 budget! (Our Program & Budget in the past fiveyears has been: $600,000 in 2009, $660,000 in 2008, $680,000 in 2007, $625,000 in 2006, $650,000 in 2005.)Your Vestry is seriously wondering what is happening among us: I’ve asked “Am I the problem?”Other Vestry persons wonder, “Are other members of our staff…?” “Is change in the Episcopal Church terribly problematicfor us?” “Can our decline in income really be solely due to global-national-local financial realities?“What can weafford?” What must we afford?” “What can we do to balance our Program & Budget and live within our means as weknow we must?” Your leadership is struggling. All questions and concerns, as well as challenges and perspectives, ideas and opportunities, will be welcome at our very, very important All-Parish Meeting on June 13.“You can’t always get what you want” is followed lyrically by “But if you try, sometimes, you just might find you getwhat you need!” Will we remember that Christ holds the church together and “try” to connect the realities made so cleain the celebrations of last December 4-5 and May 15 with the challenges of our own Parish’s Program & Budget? I trustthat if we “try” as best we are able, we will get what we “need” and maybe even what we “want”.Please, please be with us on June 13.
Yours, in Christ -
 BELOVEDS IN CHRIST,

...From the Desk of the Assistant
A
nyone who has ever been on pilgrimage in England can attest to the fact that the Christian faith is ancient there.Often we think of the Church of England as dating back to King Henry VIII, yet, the church in England goes back to when it was occupied by Rome. One legend says that Joseph of Arimathea (who donated his tomb for Jesus’ burial)himself came to share the Gospel of Christ with the British. We talk a lot these days about the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church’s role within the Anglican Communion;yet, in order for us to have an educated conversation about the affairs of our church, we must first understand wherewe’ve come from and how we got to where we are.And so, Sundays-at-Nine (adult Christian education hour between our two worship services) will spend this summer looking at the history of the Anglican tradition, including both the history of the Church in England and the Church in theUnited States, so that we can discuss contemporary issues within the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, aswell as spend time imagining where the Holy Spirit might lead us in the future. We will be using two film series called “The Story of Anglicanism” and “The Story of the Episcopal Church.” EachSunday we will have 20-25 minutes of video and 25-30 minutes discussing the questions these videos raise for us. Somethings you may already know, but hopefully there will be a lot more for you to learn. For example:1) When Augustine landed in Kent in 597, how did he establish Canterbury as the See in England?2) What impact did the Gospel make in the Dark Ages?3) How did the tomb of Thomas Becket become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of Christianity?4) The fifteenth century did not create even one single saint. What does that say about what the church was experiencingat that time?5) Did the Reformation spread quickly or slowly in England? For what reasons? In what ways was daily life changed,or was it changed? Did the Reformation change the church, or was it still the church of Augustine?6) What made someone a member of the Church of England just after the Reformation?7) What was happening when Bishop Latimer said, “we shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace as I trust shallnever be put out”?8) What called people together under the Elizabethan Settlement?9) What brought about the execution of Archbishop of Canterbury William Laud?10) What brought about diversity and denominations in England? Our weekly gatherings will be on these topics:June 6: Ancient and Medieval FoundationsJune 13: Reformation and Its ConsequencesJune 20: Creating a Global FamilyJune 27: From Jamestown to RevolutionJuly 11: The Call to MissionJuly 18: The Balance between Addressing Local Needs and Maintaining Universal Unity, Part One.July 25: The Balance between Addressing Local Needs and Maintaining Universal Unity, Part Two.You are invited to take part in this journey of discovery and discernment. From the first video from this summer’s series:“Without memories, we’re a tree without roots. History is a conversation with our ancestors whose inheritance we nowenjoy. You are about to hear a story, a story which is about you, and about those who came before you, and about thosewho will come after you.” Hope you can join us for this educational, inspirational, and exciting conversation!
God’s Peace,Martha
