Step 2:
Using your fingers, depress the teeth of the tensioner(like in figure 2) and compress the piston with the vice. As the piston is pushed in, oil will be expelledfrom the tensioner body.During this step, assure that the tensioner is firmlyand securely gripped by the vice jaws, to preventdamage to the unit from allowing the piston to sud-denly shoot out from the tensioner.
Step 3:
As the piston becomes fully compressed, release the teeth. The inner notches of the teeth will mesh with the piston grooves. Continue to compress the pistonuntil the outer notches of the teeth begin to meshwith the final groove in the piston as shown in figure3a. Once the teeth are meshed with the final groovein the piston, tighten the vice jaws.
Note:
As the piston is compressed back into the ten-sioner, the ratchet teeth should not be allowed topivot and engage the teeth that are machined into
the piston’s sides. If the piston rotates as it is com-
pressed, this may occur. If the ratchet teeth do begin to engage the teeth on the piston, slowly open the vice up while holding the teeth, as to disengage the teeth.
Note:
If the teeth do not mesh with the final groove(as is the case in figure 3b), slowly open the vice toallow the piston to slightly extend and repeat step. You
will hear a “click” noise indicating that the ratchet
teeth have advanced to the next groove on the piston.
