I was virtually stone deaf.So I started checking outwhether there’s some kindof hearing device that wouldhelp me, and I believe by divineguidance. I was directed to Dr.DeKriek. I was impressed bythe physical setup, all his newequipment, and his obvious ex-pertise.He fitted me with an aid andhas, progressively, either im-proved or replaced the aid I had,so that now I can hold a conver-sation one on one with peoplewithout them having to shout atme. I don’t believe I would havegotten this kind of service any-where else. He cares about hispatients, so I carry his businesscards with me.I totally endorse the work of Fidelity Hearing Center and Dr.DeKriek.
What are patient’smost pressingconcerns?
I have patients who come into my
ofce who have heard many stories
regarding hearing loss. They are misinformed and don’tunderstand necessarily what problemthey have or how to address it; how
to x it. Many of them have gone to
doctors who said, “Well you havea hearing loss that can’t be treated. It’s permanent hearing loss and thereis really nothing that we can do.”Inaccurate. Almost every hearingloss can be treated and be treatedeffectively and can be treated fairlyquickly so that within a week or so,those patients can be hearing muchbetter than they have for many years.
Efects o hearing loss
A third reason is people reallydon’t understand how their loss of hearing affects them. Certainly thefamily members are aware but a lotof times whensomeone hashearing loss they don’t know how itis affecting them. I go over hearingloss with the patient and use some
specic examples with their family
members to show them the thingsthey are missing. The patient isable to see the reaction his family, friends, and co-workers can have
rst-hand. The patient was likely not
aware of the hearing loss affect, it isvery frustrating for them.
So we not only want to x yourhearing but also x the commu
-nication with your family, friendsand coworkers so that everybody ishappier.”
Typically they buy a productthat isn’t the very best for them as aperson. There are many hearing aidsthat treat different types of hearing
losses. They are exible, but you
have to be aware of other featuresthat maybe should or shouldn’t bepresent for that individual patient. For example, if a patient hasa very tiny hearing aid, it is moreconvenient they change the batterythemselves and place it back in theirear. If I have a patient that is 35 or45 years old, it’s not a problem. If I have a patient who is in their 80’sand 90’s with limited dexterity, wemust consider that in the hearing aid
Another factor to consider wouldbe volume control that maybe thatpatient shouldn’t have. It’s actu-ally very common for me to havepatients not setting the volumeappropriately. Their family is usu-ally perplexed because they see thehearing aids in the ears and do notunderstand why they are not wor-king correctly. The user, for wha-tever reason, is turning the volumedown to a point where he can’t hearor maybe turning it up to a pointwhere it is too loud and it whistlesand it causes him discomfort. Thisis another factor to consider whenprescribing hearing aid.Frequently, I have patients who
come into my ofce and have bought
a hearing aid with features that theyare completely unaware of (and pro-bably charged more for that feature).I thoroughly explain every featureon any hearing aid I recommend.
Will I get rippedof?
I also have patients come into my
ofce who have been to “corporate”
type stores and have been told theyneed these very expensive hearingaids and that is really the only thingthat is going to afford themhearing again. In reality thosevery expensive hearing aids
are marked up articially.
So a pair of hearing aids atthat store might regularly sellfor $5000, their initial price is$10,700 and then they apply“discounts” to bring themdown to $5000.You couldn’t go and buya car and have it start at$20,000 and then get a bunchof discounts down to $10,000.That just doesn’t make sense.
Interview with Dr. David DeKriek
It either means they were ripping
you off in the rst place or that
they are giving you something forfar less than it is worth and theywouldn’t be able to maintain thebusiness. There are more and more pa-tients who are going online andseeing hearing aids advertisedfor “as little as $79 a month” orthink they can buy hearing aidson Ebay. That’s because they seehearing aids as a commodity ratherthan a specialized product. Patientsbelieve they can buy hearing aidsmuch like reading glasses. That’s unfortunate (and illegal)that they are available in this man-ner. Hearing aids are regu-lated and in many states,California included; itis actually illegal forpeople to sell hearingaids thru the mail. But there are uns-crupulouspeople outthere whosell mail-order hea-ring aids; thepurchaser isunaware of the illegality.Hearingaids arenot a com-modity, a
patient must be appropriately t, the
hearing aid must adjusted for their
specic hearing loss, and the patient
must return for periodic adjustment.None of those things can takeplace over the internet.Adapting to hearing aids is notan easy thing. It requires workingwith someone who can direct youand provide the appropriate changesat the right point in time. If someo-ne purchases hearing aids from my
ofce, the rst setting works well for
them. But in 4-5 months, the audi-

If you go to an ofce that knows
what they are doing vs going to an

they are doing, the exact same hea-ring aid can have two different typesof outcomes. So it has nothing to dowith the quality of that hearing aid.It has to do with the quality of theservice that you are getting. Going toan expert makes all the difference inthe world. There are no experts on EBay.
