Crochet has woven its way into mainstreamashion, taming high style with a sense o homespun warmth. In turn, truly sweet uses o crochet andknitting have fltered downinto children’s clothing. Wechallenged ourselves to pass onthis natural look without actually having to instruct our readers in thebasics o crocheting or knitting – purlone, knit two really isn’t territory we wanted to venture into, and there areplenty o niché publications that dothat quite well. Looking at the ma-terials heirloom sewers have availableto them, we realized cluney lace hada similar look to crochet, albeit soter.Immediately we set our newest sta designer, Ashley Warren Coulson, tothe task o designing something abu-lous in what we’ve decided to call
 fauxcrochet
. Vicki Ramsey, a sta artist andan avid crochet enthusiast, worked upan original crocheted bodice to inspireour cluney version and to show ourreaders how the two looks compare. Both fnished dresses are adorable, andeveryone on sta has their personalavorite. Here we oer instructionsor making the cluney ‘aux crochet’bodice dress. Those seasoned in theart o crochet might want to tacklethe actual crocheted version usingVicki’s as inspiration; however, crochetinstructions are not provided.

Kits are available in blue, pink, orburgundy silk dupioni rom MarthaPullen Company (see page 81 or KitInormation). The cluney lace versionshown was made using the “Louise”pattern with a shortened bodice (sideseams o bodice fnishes 1-inch romunderarm seam to skirt seam). Sincebodice length is a matter o personalpreerence rom size to size, our kitsare cut with a generous amount o laceor the ull to-the-waist bodice option. You will have extra lace i you choose toshorten the bodice.
