T HE 2016 S UMMER O LYMPICS

The 2 0 1 6 Su mm er Ol ym p i cs, officially

known as the G am es o f t h e XX X I O l ym pi ad ,
are a major international multi–sport event
to be celebrated in 2 0 16 . The host city of
the Games will be R i o d e Jan ei r o , B r az i l .
The events are scheduled to be held from
Au g u st 5 t o 2 1 , 2 01 6 .

The 2 0 1 6 S u mm er Ol ym p i c program is scheduled to feature 28 sports

and a total of 38 disciplines. There were two open spots for sports and
initially seven sports ( including GOLF ) began the bidding for inclusion
in the 2 0 1 6 program. Baseball and softball, which were dropped from
the program in 2 0 0 5 , GOLF , karate, squash, roller sports ( inline speed
skating ), and rugby sevens, all applied to be included. Leaders of the
seven sports held presentations in front of the In t er n at io n al O l ym p i c
Co m m i t t ee executive board in Ju n e 2 0 09.

On October 9th, 2009, the International Olympic Committee voted to INCLUDE

GOLF and rugby sevens on the program for the Games in Rio. The other
26 sports were also confirmed with a large majority of the votes.

G OLF WAS an Ol ym p i c event for the first and only

time in 1 9 04 , in S ai n t L o u i s, M i sso u r i . In a cold
rain storm, G eo r g e S . L yo n won the GOLD MEDAL for
Can ad a. Twelve years later, in 1 91 6 , Lyo n would
establish a committee to administer the RULES OF
GOLF in C an ad a. He also became the committee’s
first ch ai r m an . Nineteen years later, in 1 9 23 ,
L yo n would serve as Pr esi d en t of the R o yal Can a-
d i an G o l f Asso ci at i o n ( R .C.G .A. ). L yo n was
known as « Canada’s Grand Old Man of Golf ».
L yo n traveled to L o nd o n in 19 0 8 to defend his
O l ym p i c title, but plans to stage a golf tournament there were CAN-
CELLED at the last minute, and golf HAS NOT BEEN HELD in the O l ym p i cs
since.

THE ISSUE

Last week in B er l i n , the In t er n at i o n al Ol ym p i c Co m mi t t ee’s [ I.O.C. ] execu-

tive board voted to recommend that GOLF be INCLUDED in the 2 0 1 6 G am es; the
full membership will vote in O ct o ber [ 2009 ].

In Ju l y, in Car acas, the Ven ez u el an president Hu g o Ch ávez

DENOUNCED GOLF as « a bourgeois spor t », and officials have
taken steps TO CLOSE TWO COURSES . The joys or miseries of
playing the game aside, when it comes to assessing golf’s un-
derlying ethos, who is more persuasive, Ch ávez or the I.O .C. ?
Hugo Chávez denounced golf
as « a bourgeois sport »

THE ARGUMENT

While it would be oversimplifying either to uncritically exalt or utterly damn the

culture of golf, on balance Ch ávez HAS THE STRONGER CASE .

The golf community, like most others, is neither monolithic nor immutable, but
the current customs and values of big–time professional golfers, those most
likely to dominate O l ym p i c play, seem remote from the Olympic ideal.

Here’s how those golfers look from one international perspective, that of B ru ce
S el cr ai g , writing in T h e Ir i sh T i m es during R yd er Cu p week in 2 0 06 :

< < They drive the same luxury car s, have simil ar messy d i-
vorces, and whether they be from Denmark or De nver offer
up the same golf clichés in a glob alised TV–ready Engl ish th at
pleases their corporate sponsors. > >
American golfers are even more homogeneous and more conservative than their
global colleagues, S el cr ai g asserts, citing a S p o r t s Il lu st r at ed survey of 76
P.G.A. tour players :

● 91 percent endorsed the confirmation of Ju st i ce S am u el A. Al i t o Jr .;

● 88 percent supported the invasion of Ir aq; and

● 0 percent had seen « Brokeback Mountain ».

Not science, perhaps, but not unrevealing.

As stated on an official O l ym p i c Web site, « the goal of the Olympic Movement »

― it is a movement, not just a gateway to a W h eat i es box ―

< < [ ... ] is to contribute to bu ilding a peacefu l and be tter

discr iminatio n … with a sp irit of fr iendsh ip, solid arity and
fair p lay > >

The culture S el cr ai g describes is MORE REDOLENT OF A GATED COMMUNITY THAN

AMIABLE INTERNATIONAL POPULISM .
That culture was discreditably displayed in 2002, when protests arose over the
M ast er s T o u r n am en t being held, as ever, at the Au g u st a N at i o n al Go l f Clu b,
a private club W ITHOUT A SINGLE WOMAN MEMBER .

Lamentably, FEW male golf stars joined the protest. T i g er W o o d s was con-
spicuously willing to play at a sexually segregated club ( and one that did not
accept a black member until 1 9 9 0 ). He had no particular duty to step up ―
no honorable person can play at a segregated club ― but his inspiring per-
sonal history made his complacency especially sad. As of Ap r il [ 2009 ], when
the M ast er s again returned to Aug u st a, the club still had NO WOMEN , a fact
that should worry the golf–besotted I.O .C., which trumpets its determination
« to enh ance women’s p articipatio n in sport at al l le vels ».

Reactionary bastions like Au g u st a are not the whole story. Golf is also played
on public courses ― there are 16,000 nationwide ― and some pros emerge
from that modest terrain. N ew Y or k Ci t y, for example, has 12 municipal
courses. ( Q u een s, with four, has the most. M an h at t an has none, although I
can envision a concrete course that begins with a tee at the Ap o l lo and ends
on a green near the stock exchange. It’ll keep pedestrians alert. )
Yet golfers appear to be a less diverse group, and a group less interested in di-
versity, than, say, soccer players or runners.

As Ch ávez put it :

< < There are sports and there are sports. Do you mean to
tell me this is a people ’s sport ? > >

He answered his own question : < < It is not. > >

Although not explicitly mentioned by Ch ávez or the I.O .C ., GOLF ENTAILS QUES-
TIONABLE ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS . UN E SCO warns of the lamentable conse-
quences of building golf courses to attract international tourists :

< < An average golf cour se in a trop ic al country such as Thai-

land needs 1500 kilograms of chem ic al fert ilizer s, pest icide s
and herb icide s per year , and uses as much water as 60,000
rural vill agers. > >

Golf entails questionable
environmental ethics

Some courses have become more frugal with water, and a team of British sci-
entists argues in « The Biologist » that « many golf course s ac tively promote
nature co nser vat ion and h arbour so me of our rarest plant and animal
specie s ».

But IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE that the best–designed nature preserve includes 18

putting greens, or THAT EVEN THE MOST SOPHISTICATED GOLF COURSE IS BETTER FOR
THE ENVIRONMENT THAN NO GOLF COURSE AT ALL .

These considerations are putatively important to the Ol ym p i c M o vem en t ,

which declares its intent « to encourage and support a responsible concern
for environmental issues, to promote sustainable development in sport ».

( While not strictly a matter of environmental ethics, as a kid playing pitch and
putt in Ch ar l est o n , S o u t h Car ol i n a, I saw an alligator on the course ―
they’ve got plenty down there ― adding excitement to an otherwise placid pur-
suit. If the I.O .C. does go with golf in 2 01 6 , I hope it will be a version that fea-
tures large carnivores. )
It is hard to believe that
the most sophisticated golf course
is better for the environment
than no golf course at all

Every big–time sport has its disheartening elements. College basketball, a

game I love, is marred by periodic recruiting scandals; academic mischief; the
strange behavior of the N .C.A.A. [ Nat io nal Co lleg iat e At hlet ic Asso ciat io n ],
its governing body; and R i ck Pi t i n o ’s love life. [ P it ino is an Amer ican basket -
ball co ach. ]

Perhaps the only moments of grace and beauty and virtue in any game occur
during actual play, and we should not look too closely at its broader culture
and implicit ethics without expecting to be dismayed. But there are genuine
differences between the ethos of one sport and another. It is hard to imagine
the Du ke o f W ell i n g to n declaring, « The Battle of Water loo was won in the
corporate hosp itality tent s of the P.G .A. tour ».

FORCE OF NATURE WAS LAUNCHED FOR CONTINUOUS TRANSMISSION ON THE INTERNET ON JANUARY 1ST, 2009. IT IS A SERIES OF E–
NEWSLETTERS DESTINED FOR THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, THE ENVIRONMENTAL–TERROR–MOVEMENT, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, AND
THE MEDIA, NATION–WIDE ACROSS CANADA, THE UNITED STATES, AND OVERSEAS.

FORCE OF NATURE IS THE BRAINCHILD OF WILLIAM H. GATHERCOLE AND HIS ENTOURAGE. NORAH G IS ACTUALLY AN ACRONYM FOR THE
STABLE OF ANONYMOUS PRODUCERS AND WRITERS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THIS E–NEWSLETTER AND HAVE NOW REPLACED MR. GATHER-
COLE. THEY CONSIST OF PEOPLE FROM THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRIES : DISTRIBUTION, FERTILIZER, GOLF, LAWN CARE, MANUFACTURING,
MUNICIPAL, NURSERY, AND ORCHARD. MANY OF THESE PEOPLE ARE LEADERS IN THEIR OWN INDUSTRIES. THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN
FORCE OF NATURE, EVEN THOUGH FROM AN INDEPENDENT PERSPECTIVE, MAY NOT REFLECT THOSE OF EVERYONE IN THE GREEN
SPACE INDUSTRY, OR MR. GATHERCOLE’S MANY ASSOCIATES. BE WARNED ! FORCE OF NATURE MAY SOMETIMES BE VERY IRREVERENT
AND FEARLESS WITH THESE E–NEWSLETTERS. MR. GATHERCOLE IS NOW RETIRED FROM FORCE OF NATURE, ALTHOUGH HIS NAME CON-
TINUES TO APPEAR AS THE FOUNDER.

WILLIAM H. GATHERCOLE IS A PRINCIPAL FOUNDER OF THE MODERN PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE INDUSTRY IN BOTH ONTARIO AND
QUEBEC. HE HOLDS A DEGREE IN HORTICULTURE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH, AND ANOTHER PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCE DE-
GREE FROM MCGILL UNIVERSITY. HE HAS WORKED IN VIRTUALLY ALL ASPECTS OF THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY, INCLUDING GOLF
AND PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE, AND HAS SERVED IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS, WORKPLACE SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE.
MR. GATHERCOLE HAS SUPERVISED, CONSULTED, PROGRAMMED, AND/OR OVERSEEN THE EXECUTION OF HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS
OF PEST CONTROL APPLICATIONS IN THE URBAN LANDSCAPE. HE HAS TRAINED, INSTRUCTED, AND CONSULTED WITH THOUSANDS OF
TURF MANAGERS AND TECHNICIANS. MR. GATHERCOLE HAS ALSO BEEN AN AGRICULTURAL AGRONOMIST. FOR MANY YEARS, MR. GATHER-
COLE WAS A CONTRIBUTING COLUMNIST FOR TURF & RECREATION MAGAZINE, CANADA’S TURF AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE AUTHOR-
ITY.

MR. GATHERCOLE HAS FOLLOWED THE EVOLUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL–TERRORISM FOR OVER A QUARTER–CENTURY. HIS IN-
VOLVEMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES REACHED A FEVERED PITCH IN THE 1990S, WHEN HE ORCHESTRATED, WITH HIS COLLEAGUES, LE-
GAL ACTION AGAINST THE PROHIBITION OF PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS IN THE TOWN OF HUDSON, QUEBEC. FOR FIFTEEN YEARS, THE
STRATEGIES DESIGNED AND IMPLEMENTED BY MR. GATHERCOLE AND HIS COLLEAGUES GUARANTEED THE CONTROL OF ENVIRONMENTAL–
TERROR FOR THE ENTIRE MODERN GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY ACROSS CANADA. MR. GATHERCOLE IS PERSONALLY CREDITED FOR CRAFTING
THE GOLF INDUSTRY EXCEPTION STATUS, THAT ENDURES TO THIS DAY. HE IS ALSO THE CREATOR OF THE SIGNS THAT ARE NOW USED FOR
POSTING AFTER APPLICATION. ALTHOUGH HE CAN BE ACCUSED OF BEING ANTI–ENVIRONMENT–MOVEMENT, HE IS, IN FACT, SIMPLY A
STRONG ADVOCATE FOR THE MODERN GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. HOWEVER, THIS POSITION HAS NOT PRECLUDED HIM FROM CRITICIZING
THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY ITSELF. HIS VAST KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LONG JOURNEY WITH ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IS UNDENIABLE.
( HOPEFULLY ! )

FORCE OF NATURE IS THE INSTRUMENT OF NATIONAL ORGANIZATION RESPONDING AGAINST HUJE THAT HARM THE GREEN SPACE INDUS-
TRY ( NORAHG ) BY ROUTINELY CONCOCTING FEAR–MONGERING, FRAUDULENT LIES, MISCONCEPTIONS, COERCION,
THREATS, DECEPTIONS, TERROR, AND PARANOID CONSPIRACIES TO DECEIVE THE PUBLIC INTO BELIEVING THAT FAMILIES
ARE IN SOME NON–EXISTENT DANGER WITH CONVENTIONAL PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS. THEY ALSO SCAM GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
INTO THE NEEDLESS, SENSELESS, AND MALICIOUS PROHIBITION OF FEDERALLY LEGAL, SCIENTIFICALLY SAFE, TO-
TALLY IRREPLACEABLE, AND ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE CONVENTIONAL PEST CONTROL PRODUCTS. ENVIRO–MANIAC–
ACTIVISTS ARE IDENTIFIED ON THE BASIS OF THEIR STATEMENTS, ACTIVITIES, AFFILIATIONS, AND WHEREABOUTS. EVEN THOUGH EACH
ENVIRO–MANIAC–CULPRIT IS A MIS–GUIDED ADVERSARY, EACH STILL DESERVES OUR RESPECT. THE TERMS MANIAC, CULPRIT, TERROR-
IST, OR BASTERD ARE NOT ACCUSATIONS OF ANY LEGAL WRONG–DOING. FORCE OF NATURE IS SIMPLY HOLDING ALLEGED CULPRITS AC-
COUNTABLE FOR CONSPIRING TO CHANGE PUBLIC POLICIES THAT TERRORIZE AND THREATEN THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. THEIR
PRETENTIOUS PROHIBITIONIST RANTS HAS CREATED LOSS OF REVENUES, BUSINESS FAILURES, BANKRUPTCY, AND UNEM-
PLOYMENT, INFLICTING DESPAIR AND DESTITUTION FOR THOUSANDS OF HAPLESS VICTIMS THROUGHOUT THE GREEN SPACE
INDUSTRY. THE DEPRAVED INDIFFERENCE OF MANIAC–CULPRIT–TERRORIST–BASTERDS IS VIEWED AS A FORM OF TERROR
AGAINST THE GREEN SPACE INDUSTRY. THE INFORMATION PRESENTED IN FORCE OF NATURE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE EDUCATION
AND ENTERTAINMENT OF THE READER BY PROVIDING A SEQUENCE OF HISTORICAL EVENTS WITH COMMENTARY. ADDITIONALLY, FORCE OF
NATURE INSPIRES PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THAT ENVIRONMENTAL–TERRORISM CAN BE STOPPED ! THE EVENTS, CHARACTERS, COM-
PANIES, AND ORGANIZATIONS, DEPICTED IN THIS DOCUMENT ARE NOT ALWAYS FICTITIOUS. ANY SIMILARITY TO ACTUAL PERSONS, LIVING
